The much-awaited Malayalam film L2: Empuraan, a sequel to Lucifer, has been released worldwide on March 27 as a grand festive treat for fans. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and starring Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, the film has been jointly produced by Antony Perumbavoor, Gokulam Gopalan, and Lyca Productions under the banners of Sri Gokulam Movies, Aashirvad Cinemas, and Lyca Productions. Given the massive success of Lucifer in 2019, Empuraan carried high expectations from audiences across multiple languages.
With a massive budget of approximately ₹150 crore, Empuraan is one of the most expensive films in the Malayalam industry. The star-studded cast includes Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh, Sai Kumar, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Fazil, Sachin Khedekar, Saniya Iyappan, and Game of Thrones fame Jerome Flynn. The film’s teaser, trailers, and the powerful Mohanlal-Prithviraj combination led to record-breaking pre-release business.
Trade analysts estimate that Empuraan secured over ₹100 crore in pre-release business, with around ₹70 crore coming from the Indian market and ₹30 crore from overseas rights. Tollywood producer Dil Raju has even predicted that Empuraan could be the first Malayalam film to cross ₹300 crore at the box office. With advance bookings and pre-sales in full swing, industry experts project an opening day collection of around ₹50 crore.
L2 Empuraan OTT Release and OTT Rights
As with all major film releases, discussions about Empuraan’s OTT release have already begun. Mohanlal’s fans are eagerly waiting to know which platform has acquired the digital rights and when they can watch the movie online. Due to the high expectations surrounding the film, multiple OTT platforms were reportedly in a bidding war to secure its streaming rights.
According to a report by M9 News, streaming giant JioHotstar is in talks to acquire the OTT rights. If industry speculation is to be believed, Empuraan may set a record for the highest OTT deal in Malayalam cinema history.
As per standard OTT release policies, movies typically premiere on streaming platforms 5 to 7 weeks after their theatrical release. This means Empuraan is expected to arrive on OTT either in the last week of April or the first week of May. However, fans will have to wait for an official confirmation on the final streaming platform and date.
