India's Unique Train Offering Free Travel for All, Operating Between...

India operates more than 13,000 trains daily, providing passengers with affordable travel options across the country. However, there’s one unique train that has been offering free rides to its commuters for the past 75 years. That’s right—this particular train doesn’t require a ticket at all.

Typically, when traveling by train, passengers must purchase tickets either online or at a station. If caught without one, they face fines. But this train stands apart: no tickets are needed for its journey.

The Bhakra-Nangal Railway Service: A Historic Legacy

The Bhakra-Nangal railway service began in 1948, at a time when there was no direct route between Nangal and Bhakra during the construction of the Bhakra Nangal Dam. A special railway track was laid to facilitate the transport of heavy machinery and workers. According to Indian Rail Info, this train service isn’t managed by Indian Railways, adding to its distinctiveness.

Initially powered by steam engines, the service was modernized in 1953 with the acquisition of three new engines from America. Today, the train departs Nangal Railway Station daily at 7:05 AM, reaching Bhakra by 8:20 AM. The return journey starts at 3:05 PM, arriving back in Nangal by 4:20 PM.

Spanning a 27.3 km round trip, the train’s journey takes passengers through the picturesque Shivalik Hills, passing two horse-shoe shaped tunnels and crossing a 158.5-meter high rail-cum-road bridge. Now celebrating 75 years of service, the Bhakra-Nangal railway has faithfully transported passengers almost every day since its inception.

Over the decades, it has become an essential lifeline for many families, helping men, women, and even livestock reach their destinations on time. For those who rely on it, this train holds a special place in their hearts, symbolizing decades of dependable and free service.
