    The 78th year of independence is being celebrated with joy and pomp across the country. The fight for independence and the spirit of the martyrs have often been shown through cinema. There were some artists who took part in the freedom struggle before coming to cinema.

    The year 1947 when our country India became independent, there was a different atmosphere in Hindi cinema. During that time around 114 films were made and released. Out of these, 5 films were such that they created a new record by becoming successful at the box office.

    The Top 5 Highest Grossing Movies of 1947

    1- Shehnai

    On 15th August 1947, the first day of independent India, the Hindi film ‘Shehnai’ was released. Shehnai created history with its release on the day of independence. This film of director PL Santoshi created a stir in terms of box office earnings at that time, due to which Shehnai proved to be the first hit film of independent India.

    Veteran actors like Kishore Kumar, Nasir Khan, Indumati, Rehana and VH Desai were present in this film. Due to Kishore Da’s fans, the tickets of this film were sold in huge numbers and the film was at the top in terms of business. Kishore Kumar played the role of a police inspector in the 133-minute film Shehnai, based on the love story of four sisters, which was liked by the audience.

    If we talk about the Hindi films that earned bumper money in the first year of independence, 1947, then the name of ‘Do Bhai’ will definitely be included in it. Do Bhai, which was adorned with veteran actors like Ulhas, Kamini Kaushal and Rajan Haksar, was liked by the people and due to this the movie did a great business at the box office. This film of director Munshi Dil depicts a unique story of two brothers. After ‘Shehnai’, Do Bhai was the second such film which proved to be a hit in 1947.

    3- Dard

    Director Abdur Rashid Kirdar’s film ‘Dard’, who made many great films like ‘Danstaa, Dillagi and Dulari’, was also released in the year 1947. The songs of this film were liked by everyone, and the film also won everyone’s heart through its unique love story.

    Music director Naushad Ali’s songs proved to be effective in making this movie a musical hit. If we look at the star cast of Dard, then actors like Suraiya, Munawwar Sultana, Nawab Sahib and Shyam Kumar played important roles in it.

    The evergreen actor Dilip Kumar and Noor Jahan’s brilliant film ‘Jugnu’ is also included in this list. The special thing about this film was the songs of legendary singer Mohammad Rafi, which touched the hearts of the audience during that time. Not only this, Noor Jahan also sang excellent songs like ‘Humein To Shaam, Aaj Ki Raat and Umang Dil Mein Machli’ in this film with her charismatic voice. This movie of director Shaukat Hussain Rizvi proved to be a success at the box office that year.

    5- Mirza Sahiban

    In the list of top 5 hit films of the year 1947, the name of the movie ‘Mirza Sahiban’ comes at number five. The entire credit for the success of this Noor Jahan starrer film goes to her shoulders. However, along with Noor Jahan, actor Trilok Kapoor also impressed everyone with his acting. Mirza Sahiban was a romantic drama film.

    The heart touching story of two lovers, Mirza Sahiban got a lot of love from the audience. The situation was such that this film of director K Amarnath proved to be a hit in the first year of independent India. It was based on the folktale of Mirza Sahiban and became the fourth highest grossing film of 1947. Noor Jahan was one of the leading actresses of that time, who delivered many hits.
