Drinking Too Much Coffee? 5 Side Effects of Caffeine You Should Not Ignore

If you begin and end your day with coffee, and indulge in multiple cups of your favorite hot beverage throughout, you might be setting yourself up for a range of health issues. Despite the beneficial antioxidants in tea and coffee, excessive consumption can contribute to various wellness concerns, including cardiovascular and digestive problems. According to the latest guidelines from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a daily caffeine intake of up to 300 mg is considered safe.

While consuming tea and coffee in moderation is beneficial for health, excessive intake can lead to anxiety, headaches, digestive problems, and disrupted sleep patterns. Over time, it may exacerbate diabetes and contribute to heart issues. According to a study, consuming 3–4 cups of tea daily is generally considered safe without experiencing adverse effects.

    Side Effects of Caffeine

1- Digestive Issues: Overconsumption of caffeine can result in digestive issues such as acidity and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It stimulates increased production of stomach acid, which can lead to acid reflux, heartburn, and exacerbate conditions like gastritis and ulcers.

2- Heart Rate Problems: Caffeine affects the cardiovascular system by raising heart rate, causing hypertension, and leading to irregular heartbeats. Individuals with existing heart conditions or high blood pressure should be cautious, as caffeine can worsen these issues and potentially cause chest pain.

3- Adverse Effect on Diabetes: Caffeine can impact blood sugar levels, potentially complicating diabetes management. It may cause short-term spikes in blood glucose and insulin levels, making it harder to control diabetes. Diabetics should closely monitor their caffeine consumption.

4- Eye Health: Caffeine can increase intraocular pressure, potentially worsening glaucoma. Patients with this eye condition should limit their caffeine intake to avoid aggravating symptoms and risking further eye damage.

5- Bladder Issues: As a diuretic, caffeine increases urine production, potentially leading to bladder control issues, especially in older adults. This can result in more frequent and urgent urination, causing discomfort and inconvenience.
