Do You Also Go for a Walk Right After Dinner? Know How It Might Be Harming You Instead of Helping

Category-

Walking after dinner can be beneficial only when done at the right time and in the right way, so it’s important to change this habit if you’re doing it wrong. Let’s understand when you should go for a walk after dinner.

Digestion Issues: Right after a meal, your body focuses on the digestion process. If you start walking immediately, the body diverts its energy towards movement instead of digestion, slowing the process down. Experts say that walking immediately after eating disrupts the digestive energy, so taking a short rest is essential.

Acidity and Indigestion: Walking immediately after dinner, especially at night, can increase stomach acid, leading to heartburn, acidity, and a feeling of heaviness. This can also cause discomfort and other related issues.

Fluctuation in Blood Sugar Levels: While walking helps maintain normal blood sugar levels, going for a walk immediately after a heavy dinner can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar, which may lead to problems.

Sleep Disturbance: Becoming active right after dinner takes your body out of its relaxation mode, which can affect your sleep. As a result, you may not get quality sleep at night, leading to both physical and mental issues.

When to Walk After Dinner: According to health experts, you should go for a light walk 20–30 minutes after dinner. Light walking supports digestion. Avoid brisk or long walks. A simple 5–10 minute walk is enough. There’s no need to walk fast—just gentle movement helps the food digest better.
