Whenever a big star returns to the screen, one question pops up fast. How much did they get paid? For Johnny Depp’s Ebenezer, there is an answer for Depp, but not for much else. The film arrives in theatres next Friday, November 13, 2026, and the money side of the story is worth a closer look.
Johnny Depp’s reported fee
Depp plays Ebenezer Scrooge in Ti West’s gothic take on Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. According to reports, he received about $5 million upfront. His deal also reportedly includes a share of the film’s revenue, which means his final earnings could end up higher than that first payment.
There is a catch, though. The exact percentage and the way it is calculated have not been made public. So the safest way to put it is this: $5 million is his reported upfront pay, not his confirmed total. Until the film earns money and the contract details come out, nobody outside the deal can say how much more he might make.
What did the movie cost?
IndieWire reports a net production budget of around $38 million. That is a fairly modest number for a studio film with this cast and a big Christmas release.
But a budget figure does not tell the whole story. Production cost and marketing cost are separate. A studio can spend a lot of extra money promoting a film, and no verified marketing budget has been reported for Ebenezer. That means you cannot simply say how much the film needs to earn to break even. That also depends on distribution deals, marketing spend, and other income.
What about the rest of the cast?
This is where things go quiet. The film features Rupert Grint, Daisy Ridley, Ian McKellen, Andrea Riseborough, Tramell Tillman, and Sam Claflin, along with several other actors. For all of them, no reliable salary figure has been reported.
It is tempting to guess. Some websites do that by looking at an actor’s fame or past films. But those numbers are just estimates, and treating them as fact would mislead readers. No total figure for the cast’s pay has been reported either.
So here is the simple picture:
- Johnny Depp: about $5 million upfront, plus a reported revenue-linked deal.
- Everyone else: no verified fee found.
- Production budget: around $38 million net.
- Marketing budget: not reported.
Why the numbers matter
Salary stories get a lot of clicks because people love to compare. But the real value of a number depends on what is behind it. An upfront fee is guaranteed money. A revenue share depends on how the film performs. Two actors with the same headline number could end up with very different earnings.
It also helps to remember that reported figures can change. Studios rarely confirm contracts, so the details usually come from trade reports and industry sources. That is why it is wise to treat them as reports, not facts.
