Family plans are worth raising in a new relationship once things are becoming serious, because they affect where you live, how you work and how you spend your money. Neither person needs a full answer straight away, but both need a rough idea of whether the other wants children, how many and how soon, even if the honest answer is that neither of you knows yet.

It helps to separate two questions that often get blurred together. One is what each of you wants for the future, and the other is what you’re ready to decide now. Keeping them apart makes it possible to talk honestly about hopes without it sounding like a proposal.

The different ways people build a family

Couples build families in several ways, including having children together, adopting and fostering. Adopting means taking on full legal parenthood, while foster carers look after a child for weeks, months or years without becoming their legal parent. Anyone weighing fostering can see how Foster Care Associates sets out the process, which runs through an enquiry, a home visit, an application, an assessment, training and an approval panel.

The government has also backed fostering in England with an £88m fund to recruit 10,000 foster carers. A partner who already has children brings a ready-made family, and that changes the conversation too. Some people decide they don’t want children at all, and that’s a plan worth stating plainly as well.

Choosing the moment and the topics

Wait until the relationship is clearly heading somewhere, but raise the subject before one of you makes a big commitment such as moving in together, signing a joint tenancy or buying a home. Pick a relaxed setting like a walk or a meal instead of raising it mid-argument or by message, and say what you want first so your partner has something to respond to rather than a question to defend against. Assumptions about work and childcare deserve a direct mention too, because British views on working mothers are divided and a partner may not share yours. Topics worth covering include:

    • Whether either of you wants children, and how many
    • Whether adoption or fostering appeals to you
    • How work and childcare would be shared
    • Where you’d want to live and what you could afford

    Handling differences without ultimatums

If your answers don’t match, ask what sits behind them before deciding anything. Someone who’s unsure about children may be thinking about money, work or their own upbringing, and someone who wants them may be flexible on timing. Agree to revisit the conversation after a few weeks, because plans change as a relationship does, and stick to what each of you has actually said rather than guessing.

Questions often work better than statements, for example asking what a normal week would look like with a child, because they invite your partner to describe their own picture rather than defend a position. When two people want clearly different things and neither will move, it’s better to know that early than after you’ve built a shared home around different plans.
