The Legend of Karna Review: Animated Mahabharata Retelling on SonyLIV Is a Missed Opportunity

Karna's story has everything — identity, betrayal, destiny, honour — and this animated series somehow manages to make almost none of it feel alive.

The Legend of Karna Review - Animated Mahabharata Retelling on SonyLIV Is a Missed Opportunity

The Legend of Karna Review: ★★☆☆☆ (2/5)

The Legend of Karna is a frustrating SonyLIV animated series that approaches one of the Mahabharata’s most compelling and morally rich characters with all the depth of a video game cutscene — the animation is PlayStation 3-era stiff, the writing is tonally confused, and a Karna who never visibly grows or struggles across the entire series feels like a fundamental misunderstanding of why this story matters in the first place. A genuinely wasted opportunity given how extraordinary the source material is.

    Rating: ★★☆☆☆ (2/5)
    Platform: SonyLIV
Created by: Sharad Devarajan, Jeevan J. Kang
Voice Cast: Anup Soni as Karna
    Language: Hindi
    Genre: Animated Mythology

Karna is one of the most genuinely tragic figures in all of world mythology. A warrior of extraordinary ability, born of the sun god and abandoned at birth, raised outside the caste hierarchy that defined every opportunity available to him, loyal to a friend who did not deserve it, and fully aware that his choices were leading him toward a death he could not escape.

His story asks questions about identity, honour, destiny, and the cost of pride that have no comfortable answers. It is exactly the kind of material that a thoughtful animated series could explore in ways that live-action adaptations cannot — with visual imagination, expressive design, and a freedom from physical constraints that the medium uniquely offers.

The Legend of Karna does almost none of this.

The series, streaming on SonyLIV and created by Sharad Devarajan and Jeevan J. Kang, retells the Mahabharata from Karna’s perspective with Anup Soni voicing the title character. The ambition is clear, and the subject matter is undeniably rich. What follows, however, is a show that cannot decide who it is talking to, cannot animate its world with sufficient craft or creativity, and cannot find the moral weight in a story that is practically overflowing with it.

    The Legend of Karna Review

The most immediate problem is the animation itself. The visual style leans heavily on video game engine rendering — the kind of technically competent but expressively flat imagery that looks better as a technical demonstration than as emotional storytelling.

Every male character shares roughly the same muscular, square-jawed build, making it difficult to distinguish between them in crowd scenes. Karna wears the same outfit in every scene throughout the series, whether he is fighting demons in the rain or having a quiet conversation with his brother.

The expressive, magical world that the Mahabharata demands — a world of divine weapons, celestial interventions, and characters whose inner lives are as dramatic as their battles — is rendered in the visual language of a mid-budget video game rather than an animated epic.

The writing compounds these problems with a tonal confusion that runs through every episode. The dialogue sits awkwardly between English-language storytelling instincts and Hindi delivery — characters occasionally speak with a sensibility more suited to a Marvel film than ancient India.

Philosophical ideas that are central to the text are reduced to brief, quotable sound bites rather than explored with the depth they require.

The most damaging failure is Karna himself. He arrives in the first episode already fully formed — slaying demons within ten minutes, breaching fortress gates single-handedly in later episodes. He does not grow. He does not push back against the casteist humiliations that define his story.

His relationship with identity, with his divine origins, with his loyalty to Duryodhana — none of these are given the space to breathe and evolve. A tragic character who never visibly struggles is not tragic. He is simply powerful.

Too simple for adults, too talky for children — The Legend of Karna finds itself stranded in between and convinces neither.

The Legend of Karna is now streaming on SonyLIV.
