If you are planning to buy a new smartphone, laptop, or PC in 2026, you may need to prepare for a heavier burden on your pocket. The reason is a component we rarely think about—RAM. Once considered one of the cheapest hardware components, RAM prices are now rising rapidly, and this increase is expected to impact almost every digital device.
Why Have RAM Prices Suddenly Increased?
Since October 2025, RAM prices have more than doubled. In some cases, companies are being quoted prices that are four to five times higher than before. This surge is not due to a single reason but a combination of multiple factors. The biggest driver behind this spike is the rapid expansion of AI technology.
AI and Data Centres Have Disrupted the Balance
To run AI systems, companies are building massive data centres. These centres rely on high-performance servers and specialised memory, which consume large amounts of RAM. As the use of AI has grown, the demand for RAM has increased sharply.

However, the supply of RAM has not expanded at the same pace. This has created a major gap between demand and supply, pushing prices steadily upward.
These Are Not Small Cost Increases
According to a BBC report, technology companies often absorb minor cost increases themselves to protect customers from price hikes. But when costs rise sharply, the burden eventually reaches consumers. Many PC manufacturers say that under current conditions, avoiding price increases will be almost impossible.
One PC maker revealed that they have recently been quoted prices up to 500% higher for certain RAM components. Companies are now left with only two choices—either cut profits or increase product prices.
Impact on Every Device
RAM is not a limited-use component. It is used in smartphones, laptops, desktops, smart TVs, medical devices, and almost every electronic product. This is why higher memory prices will affect the entire technology market.
Some companies still have existing inventory, so price increases may appear less severe in the short term. However, manufacturers with limited stock have already raised prices by four to five times.
Price Pressure May Continue Until 2026 and Beyond
Industry experts believe that the surge in RAM prices could continue through 2026, and conditions may remain challenging even in 2027. High-end memory used for AI has impacted the entire market, making even consumer-grade RAM more expensive.
Large cloud service providers have already projected their needs for 2026 and 2027. This has given RAM manufacturers a clear signal that demand will remain extremely high while supply stays limited.
Why Can’t Companies Absorb the Cost?
Earlier, RAM accounted for around 15–20% of the total cost of a typical laptop. Due to current pricing, this share has increased to nearly 30–40%. Profit margins in consumer electronics are already thin, and companies cannot absorb such a large increase on their own. Some suppliers have even stopped issuing price quotations, indicating they expect further price hikes.
How Expensive Can Smartphones and Laptops Become?
The manufacturing cost of a standard laptop with 16GB RAM could increase by USD 40–50 in 2026. For smartphones, the cost per device could rise by around USD 30. This increase is expected to be passed directly on to consumers.
