Pigeon Feathers and Droppings Making Delhi Sick, Damaging Lungs- Study Claims

If you are fond of keeping pigeons or have their nests nearby, it’s essential to stay cautious. This is because contact with pigeon feathers and droppings can directly affect your health. This claim is not just hearsay; it has been highlighted in a study. The research indicates that exposure to pigeon feathers and droppings can have detrimental health effects, especially for children and young adults, who are advised to take precautions.

According to a report by PTI, the study is linked to a boy living in Delhi. The boy developed a severe allergy due to prolonged exposure to pigeon feathers and droppings. Doctors associated with the study reported that an 11-year-old boy from East Delhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. Initially, his symptoms resembled a common cough, but his condition worsened due to breathing difficulties.

Dr. Dhiran Gupta, co-director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), explained that upon examination, the boy was found to have Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (HP), an allergy caused by proteins related to pigeons. His condition required immediate medical attention.

    What is Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis?
Dr. Gupta described Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis as a lung-related disease that causes breathing difficulties. He noted that while this condition is common among young adults, it is rare in children. It is estimated that it affects two to four people per one million population each year.

    How was the boy treated?
The boy diagnosed with Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis was administered steroid medication. For his breathing difficulties, high-pressure oxygen therapy was provided, where oxygen is delivered into the body through a tube inserted into the nose. Dr. Gupta stated that this therapy helped reduce the inflammation in the boy’s lungs and brought his breathing back to near-normal levels. Due to the positive effects of the treatment and the comprehensive care provided, he was discharged from the hospital.

    What causes Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis?
Dr. Gupta explained that Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis occurs due to repeated exposure to environmental substances, such as bird-related materials, mold, and fungi. Additionally, exposure to smoke from e-cigarettes can also lead to this condition. He emphasized that immediate action can prevent such issues.

Furthermore, there is a need for education and awareness regarding the damage caused by bird droppings and feathers to prevent these kinds of diseases. He also stressed the importance of being cautious while living near seemingly harmless pigeons and poultry birds.
