Use Aadhaar Card for Travel and Hotel Stays Without Disclosing Your Number: Learn About This Privacy Feature

Instances of Aadhaar-based fraud have been increasing in recent years. These scams typically involve criminals using stolen Aadhaar numbers to gain financial benefits or access services. Cybercriminals have developed sophisticated methods to bypass standard security measures like OTPs, CVV numbers, and even bank details.

Several reports highlight cybercriminals exploiting the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS). These scams involve duplicating individuals’ Aadhaar-linked biometrics using silicon fingerprints and unauthorized biometric devices, allowing them to steal funds from victims’ bank accounts.

In response, many financial institutions are advising Aadhaar holders to protect their identity by adopting security measures such as locking biometrics and using masked Aadhaar whenever possible.

    Masked Aadhaar:

Masked Aadhaar is a feature introduced by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to enhance privacy and limit the exposure of Aadhaar details. In a masked Aadhaar, part of the Aadhaar number is hidden, while key demographic details like name, photograph, and QR code remain visible.

Aadhaar is available in several forms, including the Aadhaar letter, Aadhaar PVC card, eAadhaar, masked Aadhaar, and mAadhaar, all of which are equally valid and acceptable.

In simple terms, a masked Aadhaar is a version where the first eight digits of your Aadhaar number are replaced with ‘X,’ ensuring better privacy and preventing misuse.

    Benefits of Using Masked Aadhaar:

    • Protects your privacy.
    • Prevents misuse of your Aadhaar number.
    • Accepted by most organizations.
    • You can share masked Aadhaar instead of the full Aadhaar number, ensuring enhanced privacy.

The masked Aadhaar can be downloaded in a password-protected PDF format, which you can print and use when required.

    How to Download Masked Aadhaar:

    1. Visit the official UIDAI website at https://uidai.gov.in.
    2. Under the “My Aadhaar” section, click on “Download Aadhaar.”
    3. You will be redirected to the Aadhaar download page.
    4. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number or 16-digit Virtual ID (VID), along with other required details such as full name, postcode, and security code.
    5. In the “Select your preference” section, choose the “Masked Aadhaar” option.
    6. Opt to receive an OTP on your registered mobile number.
    7. Enter the OTP to verify.
    8. You can now download the masked Aadhaar in a password-protected PDF format.

Keep your masked Aadhaar document secure and avoid sharing it with unauthorized individuals.
