Papa Yaar OTT Release Date - Zakir Khan New Special on Netflix

Zakir Khan has built his entire comedic identity around turning everyday, deeply personal moments into something the whole country can laugh and cry along with, and Papa Yaar looks like it’s continuing that exact tradition, just aimed squarely at fatherhood this time.

The special streams on Netflix starting September 18, and going by everything revealed so far, it’s shaping up to be one of his more emotionally layered specials yet.

    When and Where to Watch

Papa Yaar drops on Netflix on September 18. Zakir announced the date himself on Instagram, sharing a poster and writing, “Papa aa rahe hai aur apan toh ready hi hain yaar,” alongside the release details. The poster shows him from behind, looking out toward an audience, a fairly understated visual choice for a special that’s clearly meant to hit close to home.

The announcement has understandably generated a lot of excitement among his fans, many of whom have followed his journey closely, from stand-up stages to becoming one of India’s most recognizable digital comedians.

If you’re curious about his broader career trajectory, Zakir Khan’s shayaris on love, friendship, dreams and life are worth checking out too, since his writing has always carried the same emotional honesty that seems to define Papa Yaar.

    What’s Papa Yaar Actually About

True to its title, Papa Yaar leans into Zakir’s signature blend of humour and deeply personal storytelling. This time, the focus is on the relationship between a father and child and how that dynamic quietly shifts over the years.

Through his stories, Zakir captures the moment most people eventually reach, seeing their father not just as an authority figure, but as an actual person, someone with his own dreams, fears, flaws and untold stories.

Talking about the special, Zakir reflected on his own relationship with his father, saying that as a child, he often felt like he was rebelling against everything his father stood for.

Looking back now, though, he realizes that every foundation he’s built his life on came from the values and lessons his father tried to instill in him, long before he was mature enough to fully understand them.

He described Papa Yaar as his way of thanking his father, and by extension, all the fathers who quietly shape the people their children become.

    Behind the Special

Papa Yaar is created by Zakir Khan and directed by Karan Asnani, backed by Sakht Films and OML Entertainment. Netflix had already built anticipation earlier with a short teaser featuring Zakir’s father, Ustad Ismail Khan, captioned with a similarly warm, personal tone.

The special comes right after Zakir wrapped up his Papa Yaar tour, which kicked off in June 2025 and saw veteran actor-comedian Johny Lever make a special appearance during its final Mumbai show.

Since winning Comedy Central’s India’s Best Stand-Up Comedian competition back in 2012, Zakir has built a strong body of work, including specials like Delulu Express, Kaksha and Haq Se Single, all carrying that same mix of humour and heart he’s become known for.

Worth noting, Zakir had previously spoken about stepping back from live shows for a while. If you want the full context on that, Zakir Khan’s announcement of a long hiatus from stand-up comedy after June 2026 covers what he shared about that decision.

    Should You Watch It?

If Zakir’s earlier specials are anything to go by, Papa Yaar is likely to land somewhere between genuinely funny and quietly moving, the kind of special that makes you laugh through most of it and then catches you off guard with something that hits a little too close to home.

For anyone who’s ever had a complicated, evolving relationship with a parent, this one looks worth clearing an evening for. Papa Yaar streams exclusively on Netflix from September 18, 2026.
