U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his willingness to help resolve the Kashmir issue between India and Pakistan. He also appeared to take some credit for easing the rising tensions between the two nations following the Pahalgam attack on April 22 and for helping them agree to a ceasefire. Commenting on Kashmir, Trump remarked that perhaps a solution to this problem might emerge “after a thousand years.” It’s worth recalling that Trump had earlier tweeted, referring to the Kashmir issue as a 150-year-old problem. If he truly believes that, how likely is it that he can actually help both countries find a resolution?
What Did Trump Say Today?
Reacting to the India-Pakistan ceasefire agreement, President Trump said on Sunday that both countries have strong leadership. He stated, “I’m proud of the strong and unbreakable leadership of both India and Pakistan. They’ve shown the wisdom to understand that stopping the current conflict was necessary. This step could save many lives. Millions of innocent people could have died! Your courageous actions will strengthen your legacy.”
Trump Says He Will Try to Solve the Kashmir Issue
Trump further said that the U.S. is proud to have helped with this historic decision. He also mentioned plans to expand trade with both India and Pakistan. According to Trump, although this wasn’t discussed earlier, he now intends to take steps in that direction. Speaking on the Kashmir issue, Trump said he would try to work with both countries to find a solution. He added that maybe a resolution would come “after a thousand years.” In the end, he congratulated the leadership of India and Pakistan and said, “God bless the leadership of India and Pakistan. They have done a great job!!!”
Trump Claims Kashmir Issue Is 1,500 Years Old
Earlier, President Trump had stated, “I am very close to India and also very close to Pakistan, and they have been fighting in Kashmir for a thousand years. The Kashmir issue has been ongoing for a thousand years, maybe even longer. That was a terrible (terrorist) attack. There has been tension on that border for 1,500 years. It has always been like that, but I’m confident they will resolve it somehow. I know both leaders. There is tension between Pakistan and India, but it has always been that way.”
“Kashmir Is Not a 1,000-Year-Old Biblical Conflict”
Responding to Trump’s proposal to help resolve the Kashmir issue, Congress leader Manish Tewari said that this is not some “1,000-year-old biblical conflict.” He clarified that the Kashmir issue only began 78 years ago.
Manish Tewari posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Someone in America should inform President Trump that Kashmir is not a 1,000-year-old dispute. It started on October 22, 1947, when Pakistan attacked Jammu and Kashmir. On October 26, 1947, Maharaja Hari Singh officially acceded to India. This included the area that Pakistan now occupies illegally. Why is it so difficult to understand this simple fact?”
