Some films get a second life on OTT, and Baththa looks like one of them. Vijay Sethupathi’s Tamil comedy drama hits Netflix today, October 29, 2026, about four weeks after it opened in theatres on October 1. If you missed it on the big screen, you can now watch it at home.
The film streams in Tamil, with dubbed versions in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. That should help viewers outside Tamil Nadu pick it up easily.
What is the story about?
The story is set in Madras in 1986. Vijay Sethupathi plays Baththavachalam, a gangster who is feared across his neighbourhood. People get nervous when he walks by, and he is used to getting his way.
Then something silly and unexpected happens. A young schoolboy named Sabhari accidentally locks him inside a deserted school toilet. When the boy realizes what he has done, he goes back to free him, but he is too scared of the man to open the door. What starts as an awkward mistake slowly turns into a story about fear, weakness, and a strange kind of human bond.
Cut off from his usual world, the gangster has to face things he never had to think about before. The film uses this small, odd setup to talk about masculinity, patriarchy, redemption, and whether a person can really change. It mixes comedy with emotion, so it is not just about violence.
Who is in the cast?
Vijay Sethupathi leads the film. Malayalam actor Lijomol Jose plays Kannima, and young Sai Prithviraj plays Sabhari. Santhy Balachandran, Ajay Ghosh, Arjun Chidambaram, and Baby Sahasra Shree are also part of the cast.
Balaji Tharaneetharan wrote and directed the film. This is his third film with Vijay Sethupathi, after Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom and Seethakaathi. Sai Abhyankkar composed the music, and the song Magale has been very popular on social media shorts and reels.
What did critics say?
Reviews have been warm. Critics praised the sensitive direction, the performances of Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Prithviraj, and the music. Some have compared its gentle, heartwarming feel to Meiyazhagan. A quiet box office run
Despite the good word, the film did not do big business. According to the tracker Sacnilk, it earned around Rs 33 crore worldwide. There is also a worry about piracy, since clips from the film have been spreading online. An OTT release could help it reach the audience it missed in theatres.
More to watch this week

Should you watch it?
If you like gentle stories with a good heart, yes. Baththa is not a loud action film. It is a warm, funny, and thoughtful story about a tough man forced to slow down and listen. It’s also easy to watch with family now that it comes in five languages.
Baththa streams on Netflix from October 29, 2026.
