Jio IPO Allotment Chances: Only 70.9 Lakh Retail Investors Can Get Shares, Here Is the Simple Maths

Retail allotment is a lucky draw. Here are the odds at 1 to 5 crore applications, plus how families and Reliance shareholders can improve their chances.

The Jio IPO opens tomorrow, Wednesday, October 21, and lakhs of small investors are expected to apply. But there is one simple fact most people do not know. In the retail category, only about 70.9 lakh people can get Jio shares, no matter how many apply. So what are the real chances of getting an allotment, and what can improve them? Here is a simple explanation using the official numbers from the Jio IPO.

Jio Platforms is selling shares at Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 each, in lots of 12 shares. One lot costs Rs 13,428 at the upper price. The issue closes on October 23, and allotment results are expected on Monday, October 26.

Only 70.9 Lakh Retail Investors Can Get Jio Shares

Out of the shares on offer to the public, 8.50 crore shares are kept for retail investors, which means people applying for up to Rs 2 lakh. Since one lot has 12 shares, this works out to about 70.86 lakh lots.

When an IPO gets more applications than shares, SEBI rules say that retail allotment is done through a lucky draw. Each selected applicant gets one lot of 12 shares. This means a maximum of about 70.86 lakh retail investors can get Jio shares. Everyone else gets their blocked money back.

Jio IPO Allotment Chances: Simple Table

The chances depend on how many people apply in the retail category. The table below shows the approximate chance of getting one lot for different numbers of retail applications.

Number of Retail ApplicationsApproximate Chance of Getting One Lot
50 lakhAlmost certain (everyone gets at least one lot)
    1 croreAbout 71%
    1.5 croreAbout 47%
    2 croreAbout 35%
    3 croreAbout 24%
    5 croreAbout 14%

Given the huge buzz around the Jio IPO and the record demand from big investors, the number of retail applications could be very high. The more people apply, the lower the chance for each person.

Applying for More Lots Does Not Improve the Chances

This is the most common mistake small investors make. In a heavily oversubscribed IPO, the lucky draw is done per application, not per lot. An investor who applies for 14 lots worth Rs 1.88 lakh has the same chance as someone who applies for just one lot of Rs 13,428. If selected, both usually get only one lot.

Applying for more lots only blocks more money in the bank account for a few days. For most retail investors, applying for one lot at the cut-off price is enough.

How Families Can Improve Their Chances

Each person with their own PAN card and demat account can apply separately. This is fully allowed, as long as each application is made from a different PAN. A family where several members apply has a much better chance that at least one of them gets shares.

Family Members Applying (One Lot Each)Chance That At Least One Gets Shares (at 2 crore applications)
    1About 35%
    2About 58%
    3About 73%
    4About 83%

Each application must come from a separate PAN and demat account in that person’s own name. Making two applications with the same PAN in the same category is not allowed, and both can get rejected.

    Extra Chance for Reliance Shareholders

People who held Reliance Industries shares in their demat account on October 14 get a second chance. A separate quota of Rs 2,500 crore, or about 2.23 crore shares, is kept only for them. That is about 18.6 lakh lots of 12 shares.

Eligible Reliance shareholders can apply once in the shareholder category and once in the retail category using the same PAN. These are treated as two separate applications, which almost doubles their chances. The shareholder category also has fewer eligible applicants than the retail category, so the odds there could be better.

    Chances for HNI Investors

Investors applying for more than Rs 2 lakh fall in the HNI or non-institutional category. Here too, allotment is done through a lucky draw, with each winner getting the minimum application size.

    CategoryMinimum ApplicationMaximum Number of Winners
Small HNI (Rs 2 lakh to Rs 10 lakh)15 lots (Rs 2,01,420)About 67,500
Big HNI (above Rs 10 lakh)75 lots (Rs 10,07,100)About 27,000

As with retail, applying for a bigger amount within the same HNI category does not improve the chances once the category is heavily oversubscribed.

How to Work Out the Chances After the IPO Closes

On October 23, the stock exchanges will publish the total number of retail applications received. A simple way to estimate the chance of getting shares is to divide 70.86 lakh by the number of retail applications.

For example, if 1.8 crore retail applications are received, the chance is about 70.86 lakh divided by 1.8 crore, which is roughly 39%. Note that the number of applications is different from the “times subscribed” figure shown on most apps, which counts shares, not people.

    Simple Tips Before Applying

    • Apply for one lot at the cut-off price if the goal is only to get an allotment.
    • Make sure the PAN is linked to the demat account and the bank account has enough balance.
    • Approve the UPI mandate on time. Applications without an approved mandate are not counted.
    • Avoid applying at the last minute on October 23, when bank and UPI servers are often slow.
    • Do not borrow money to apply. Getting shares is a matter of luck, and listing gains are never guaranteed.

When Will the Jio IPO Allotment Status Be Out?

The allotment is expected to be finalised on Monday, October 26. Investors can check their status on the website of the registrar, KFin Technologies, or on the BSE and NSE websites using their PAN or application number. Shares will be credited to demat accounts by October 27, and the stock is expected to list on October 28.

Disclaimer: This article is for information only and is not investment advice. The allotment chances shown are estimates based on the share numbers in the offer document, and the actual result depends on final applications and the allotment process. Investors should read the offer document and consult a SEBI-registered financial adviser before applying.
