Delhi Pollution: Transport Department Mandates Colour-Coded Fuel Stickers

The Delhi Transport Department has made it mandatory for vehicle owners to display colour-coded stickers on their vehicles to indicate the type of fuel they use. This requirement is in line with a Supreme Court order from August 12, 2018, and amendments to Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

According to the public notice, all vehicles in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi must display chromium-based hologram stickers for easy identification of fuel types during road checks. The colour-coded stickers will help authorities quickly identify vehicles using petrol, diesel, CNG, or electric fuel, supporting efforts to reduce pollution and improve air quality.

This rule applies to both new and old vehicles. It has been in effect for new vehicles since April 1, 2019, and is now mandatory for older vehicles, registered before March 31, 2019. The stickers must be affixed to the windscreen to comply with the law.

Owners of older vehicles are advised to visit their vehicle dealers for sticker installation. An online service for booking installation of both High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) and fuel-type stickers is available through the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) website or the Transport Department’s portal.

The stickers will feature key vehicle details, including registration number, registering authority, a laser-branded PIN, and engine and chassis numbers to ensure traceability and compliance.

Failure to comply with the mandate will result in penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act. Vehicle owners are urged to install the stickers promptly to avoid fines and contribute to improving the city’s air quality by reducing emissions.
