Deadpool & Wolverine Review: A Meta Marvel Mashup

Deadpool & Wolverine Review: A Meta Marvel Mashup

    Rating: ★★★☆☆

“Deadpool & Wolverine” exists because Hugh Jackman, who had supposedly retired his iconic Wolverine character after 2017’s “Logan,” loved the Deadpool series and wanted a mutant team-up. The result is a self-aware, fourth-wall-breaking romp that pushes the boundaries of sincerity while tugging at our heartstrings.

About half an hour into the movie, Wade Wilson (Deadpool) gets sent on a multiverse-spanning mission that pairs him with Wolverine. Together, they traverse a prison-like “Void” ruled by Cassandra Nova, a bald, skeletal twin sister of Charles Xavier. The Void is a metaphorical junkyard, filled with debris and monuments drawn from Disney and 20th Century Fox films. Look closely, and you’ll spot cameos galore—a studio graveyard for discarded franchises.

As a buddy comedy, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is rock solid. The bromance between Reynolds and Jackman shines, but it stumbles when exposition weighs it down. Clunky plot junk interrupts the fun, even as Deadpool quips about it in real time.

The film blends MCU elements with R-rated content, appealing to Millennials with pop culture references. It’s fun and familiar, lacking a significant plot but charming nonetheless. Paradoxically, that’s what this movie feels like—a delightful mess of meta moments and mutant mayhem.

In summary, “Deadpool & Wolverine” won’t redefine the genre, but it’s a blast for fans who appreciate irreverent humor, Easter eggs, and the legacy of two beloved characters. Whether you’re Team Deadpool or Team Wolverine, this film delivers a wild ride through cinematic history.
