The Government of India is rapidly working to modernise the passport system. Important changes such as the introduction of e-passports, enhanced security features, and an improved application process are being implemented. By 2030, the number of Passport Seva Kendras across the country will also be increased to ensure faster and more convenient services for citizens.
Here Are 5 Big Changes Coming to Indian Passports
1. E-passport with RFID Chip and Biometric Data: The Indian government has started rolling out e-passports embedded with RFID chips that securely store personal and biometric data. This technology will help prevent identity theft and fraud. The rollout has already begun in cities like Goa and Ranchi.
2. Residential Address to Be Removed from Passport, Barcode for Access: The last page of the passport will no longer display the holder’s residential address. Instead, a barcode will be printed, which authorised immigration officers can scan to access the address. This step will help protect privacy and enhance data security.

3. Parents’ Names to Be Removed from Passport: Under the new system, parents’ names will not be mentioned on the passport. This change will benefit individuals from non-traditional family structures, such as those with single parents or divorced parents. It will also simplify the passport application process.
4. Birth Certificate Mandatory for Those Born After 1 October 2023: People born on or after 1 October 2023 must submit a birth certificate issued by an authorised registrar to apply for a passport. Those born before this date can continue using alternative documents like Aadhaar, PAN, or school certificates.
5. More Passport Seva Kendras by 2030: The government aims to increase the number of Passport Seva Kendras by 2030 to improve accessibility and efficiency. This will ensure that more people across the country can avail of passport services near their location.
