1670 Netflix Review: A Hilarious Romp Through Historical Absurdity

1670, the Polish mockumentary satirical comedy series released on Netflix on December 13, 2023, presents a refreshing and side-splitting take on historical absurdity. Created by Jakub Rużyłło and skillfully directed by Maciej Buchwald and Kordian Kądziela, the show introduces audiences to the whimsical world of Jan Paweł Adamczewski, the eccentric Sarmatian head of a noble family in Adamczycha, situated within the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth during the 17th century.

Bartłomiej Topa steals the spotlight as Jan Paweł Adamczewski, a nobleman and part owner of the peculiar village of Adamczycha. The character’s antics, coupled with Topa’s impeccable comedic timing, make for an uproarious viewing experience. Katarzyna Herman as Zofia, Jan Paweł’s religious fanatic wife, adds another layer of absurdity to the narrative, creating a dynamic duo that keeps the laughter rolling.

The ensemble cast, including Martyna Byczkowska as the rebellious Aniela, Michał Balicki as the heir Stanisław, Michał Sikorski as the priest Jakub, and Andrzej Kłak as the nemesis Andrzej, contributes to the show’s comedic brilliance. Each character, with their unique quirks and idiosyncrasies, adds to the overall charm of 1670.

The series cleverly uses the mockumentary format to blend historical elements with satirical comedy. The juxtaposition of 17th-century nobility with modern comedic sensibilities creates a delightful dissonance that keeps viewers engaged and amused throughout the episodes. The absurdity of the characters’ actions, combined with the witty writing of Jakub Rużyłło, results in a comedic masterpiece that transcends the confines of time.

The recurring characters, played by talented actors such as Irena Melcer, Paulina Matusewicz, and Kirył Pietruczuk, contribute to the richness of the storyline, weaving in additional layers of humor and satire. The inclusion of a diverse cast further enhances the series’ appeal, offering a well-rounded and entertaining ensemble.

1670 strikes a perfect balance between historical satire and modern humor, making it a standout in the mockumentary genre. The impeccable attention to detail in costumes and set design adds an extra layer of authenticity to the ludicrous scenarios, creating a visually immersive experience.

In conclusion, 1670 is a comedic gem that delivers laughs from start to finish. With a stellar cast, clever writing, and inventive direction, the series successfully transports audiences to a hilariously absurd version of 17th-century Poland. For those seeking a lighthearted escape into historical lunacy, 1670 is a must-watch that promises an entertaining journey through the annals of mockumentary excellence.
