The metro is nothing short of a boon for the National Capital. In Delhi, the metro has played a crucial role in providing quality public transport services. People are extensively using the metro, which is why Delhi Metro is counted among the busiest metro systems in the country. On average, around 5 million people travel by metro daily. In November 2024, this number even reached 7.8 million.
Amidst this crowd, Delhi Metro is now introducing a new technology that will allow passengers to know in advance which coach of the train is less crowded and where seats might be available. Currently, this technology is being tested as a pilot project on the Magenta Line. If the trial yields positive results, it will be implemented across other metro lines as well. This will not only make travel more convenient but also more organized.
How does this system work?
With the help of this new technology, Delhi Metro displays the crowd percentage in each coach on the Passenger Information Display System (PIDS). Usually, passengers board any coach without planning, which leads to some coaches being overcrowded while others remain relatively empty. This new system aims to solve that problem.

According to Delhi Metro officials, the PIDS system works based on the weight of each coach. The software compares the empty and filled weight of each coach and then displays how crowded it is. The display shows coach numbers like C1, C2, C3 along with the percentage of occupancy, allowing passengers to decide in advance which coach to board.
Heavy rush during peak hours
Peak hours in Delhi Metro are typically from 8 AM to 12 PM and 5 PM to 9 PM. During these times, the crowd is at its highest. This new facility can be especially helpful during peak hours when passengers often don’t even find standing space. Knowing the crowd level in each coach beforehand can be a big relief for commuters.
