UPI is gaining popularity not only in India but across many countries around the world. In India, digital payments through UPI are increasing rapidly. Whether you’re paying a vegetable vendor or shopping online, most people now prefer using UPI for transactions. In this growing digital payment trend, global payment company PayPal has launched PayPal World, a platform designed to connect the world’s largest payment systems and digital wallets.
With this launch, Indian users can now use UPI through PayPal to make easy cross-border payments.
A Global Collaboration
This new system is being launched in partnership with India’s NPCI International, Tenpay Global, Mercado Pago, and Venmo. It aims to make payments and money transfers easier for nearly 2 billion consumers across the globe. This development reduces the need for credit cards or other payment channels. It will also simplify the payment process and eliminate the need for launching a different UPI app in each country.
Seamless International Payments Using UPI
PayPal World will initially offer interoperability between PayPal and Venmo, and UPI will be included from the beginning. This means Indian users will be able to shop from international merchants and make payments using the UPI option. For example, if you’re buying clothes from an online store in the US, you just need to select PayPal at checkout. Then you’ll see the UPI option, allowing you to complete the payment directly through your UPI account.

NPCI Welcomes the Integration
Ritesh Shukla, Managing Director and CEO of NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), welcomed this move. He said that integrating UPI into the PayPal World platform is an important step toward global expansion of UPI and will make cross-border payments smoother. PayPal also announced that more wallets will join the platform in the coming months.
What is PayPal?
PayPal is an online payment system that allows you to send and receive money globally. It works like a digital wallet, enabling you to link your bank account, credit card, or debit card to make payments online. With PayPal, you can shop online, pay bills, and send money to friends and family across the world.
This new partnership between UPI and PayPal is a major step toward making international transactions easier for Indian users.
