Thadayam Web Series Review: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3.5/5)

Thadayam delivers a gripping true-crime premise backed by strong performances, especially from Samuthirakani. While predictable writing and familiar tropes hold it back from greatness, the atmospheric setting and grounded investigation make it a solid watch for crime thriller fans.

Thadayam is a Tamil crime thriller web series inspired by real-life murders along the Tamil Nadu–Andhra Pradesh border in the late 1990s. Premiering on February 27, 2026, on ZEE5, the show marks Samuthirakani’s debut in the web series space.

With six episodes of around 20 minutes each, Thadayam promises a gripping true-crime narrative rooted in rural fear and folklore. It blends investigative drama with social commentary on patriarchy and systemic failure.

    The Core Premise

The story is set in the 90s, during a wave of midnight murders that terrorized border villages. Married women are targeted in their homes, and only their sacred thaalis and waist chains are stolen.

At every crime scene, a chilling question mark is drawn in blood. The pattern sparks panic across villages and slowly takes shape as disturbing local folklore.

Unlike regular robberies, the killer shows no interest in money or valuables. This ritualistic pattern becomes the key thread in the investigation.

    The Investigation Begins

Sub-Inspector Adhiyaman, played by Samuthirakani, is a sidelined officer who works as a tuition teacher while facing departmental setbacks. His instincts and attention to detail make him notice the recurring pattern others ignore.

Inspector Lakshmi, portrayed by Sshivada, recognizes his talent and brings him into a special task force. Together, they begin connecting similar cases across state borders.

The investigation reveals that over 70 unsolved murders across Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu may be linked. What initially seemed isolated becomes part of a chilling chain of crimes.

    Performances

Samuthirakani delivers a grounded and believable performance as Adhiyaman. His restrained acting style adds authenticity to the role of an honest officer fighting both criminals and bureaucracy.

Sshivada brings confidence and sharpness to Inspector Lakshmi. She portrays a strong officer navigating a male-dominated system with intelligence and calm authority.

Raj Tirandasu and Prem, who play key antagonistic roles, add menace to the story. Raj Tirandasu, in particular, leaves a strong impression with his intense screen presence.

The supporting cast, including Munnar Ramesh, Sundharpandyan, and others, contributes effectively to the rural setting and tense atmosphere.

    Direction and Writing

Written and directed by Navinkumar Palanivel, Thadayam aims to create a slow-burning crime drama. The storytelling focuses more on mood and atmosphere rather than fast twists.

The rural backdrop, dusty roads, and dimly lit houses enhance the tension. The show takes its time to build suspense, especially in the early episodes.

However, the execution does not always match the strong premise. At times, the series leans heavily on shock value and familiar crime drama clichés.

    Themes and Social Commentary

Beyond the murders, Thadayam explores themes of patriarchy and systemic neglect. The targeting of married women and the theft of sacred symbols raise deeper questions about societal beliefs.

The show also highlights the struggles of honest officers in a flawed system. Bureaucratic indifference and political pressure create obstacles in solving the crimes.

There is an attempt to examine the psychology of killers and rural superstition. While the ideas are strong, the screenplay does not always explore them with enough depth.

    Technical Aspects

The background score plays a major role in creating tension. It enhances the suspense during night scenes and investigative moments.

Cinematography captures the border-town landscape well. The rural atmosphere feels authentic and grounded, which strengthens the realism of the story.

The editing keeps the episodes crisp in length, but some sequences still feel stretched. A tighter screenplay could have made the narrative more gripping.

    Strengths and Weaknesses

Below is a quick overview of what works and what does not:

    StrengthsWeaknesses
Strong lead performance by SamuthirakaniPredictable narrative beats
    Atmospheric rural settingOveruse of clichés
Gripping true-crime premiseShock value over subtlety
Effective background scoreEarly reveal reduces suspense

The show benefits from its grounded performances and realistic setting. However, it sometimes sacrifices originality for familiar thriller formulas.

    Audience and Critical Reception

Initial reactions have been mixed. Many viewers appreciate the serious tone and Samuthirakani’s performance.

Some feel the story stretches a simple idea across six episodes without delivering a powerful payoff. Others enjoy the slow-burn cat-and-mouse dynamic despite minor flaws.

The series has also drawn attention for being inspired by real incidents, though it does not retell any specific documented case. Instead, it presents a fictionalized composite of multiple unsolved crimes.

    Where to Watch

Thadayam is streaming exclusively on ZEE5. It is available in Tamil with English subtitles, and additional language versions may follow. The series can also be accessed through OTTplay Premium.

    Final Verdict

Thadayam starts with a gripping premise rooted in true events. The ritualistic murders and rural setting create strong initial intrigue.

Samuthirakani’s performance anchors the series and keeps it watchable. The atmosphere and background score add to the tension.

However, predictable writing on familiar thriller elements prevents it from becoming exceptional. While it offers moments of suspense, it falls short of delivering a truly unforgettable experience.

For viewers who enjoy crime dramas with realistic police work, Thadayam is worth a watch. It may not redefine the genre, but it delivers a sincere attempt at telling a dark chapter inspired by real-life fear.
