T20 World Cup 2026 Controversy: Bangladesh Demands Security, ICC Running Out of Time

T20 World Cup 2026 Controversy: Bangladesh Demands Security, ICC Running Out of Time

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has already come under the spotlight even before it begins. Following reports of brutal killings of Hindus in Bangladesh and the subsequent exclusion of Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL, tensions have risen between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Earlier, the Bangladesh Cricket Board had written to the ICC requesting that Bangladesh’s matches against India be moved outside India, citing security concerns. The BCCI had opposed the request, stressing that adequate security arrangements would be in place. So far, the BCB’s demand has not been accepted. Now, reports suggest that the BCB has written another letter to the ICC, stating that it is prepared to send its team to India, albeit under certain conditions.

Demand for Security for All Members

According to an NDTV report, the BCB has sought assurances of personal security for every member of the Bangladesh contingent travelling to India for the T20 World Cup 2026. This includes not only the players but also coaches, support staff, and officials.

In response, the ICC has shared its comprehensive security plan and also offered several alternatives, while leaving the final decision to the BCB. The BCB’s email reportedly includes links to media reports claiming that the ICC has outright rejected Bangladesh’s earlier request and warned that refusal to travel could result in points being deducted.

    ICC Running Out of Time

The ICC is now under increasing pressure as the tournament schedule has already been finalised. Arrangements across multiple host cities are in place, and advance bookings have been made. Changing the schedule just a month before the tournament would be extremely difficult.

Bangladesh are scheduled to play their World Cup matches in Kolkata and Mumbai. The tournament will begin on 7 February, while the final is set to be played on 8 March.
