Over 6 Million Vehicles in Delhi-NCR Won’t Get Petrol and Diesel from July 1 – Here’s Why

Category-

From July 1, over 6 million vehicles in Delhi will no longer be able to get petrol or diesel. Not just Delhi—by the end of this year, lakhs of vehicles in five major NCR cities—Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Faridabad, and Sonipat—will also be denied fuel. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has issued strict guidelines to reduce pollution in Delhi. According to the new rule, petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years will not be allowed to refuel in Delhi starting July 1.

Fuel Crisis for Old Vehicles in NCR

From November 1, the same rule will apply to Gurugram, Sonipat, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddha Nagar. In other parts of NCR, all old vehicles are expected to go off-road by April 2026. To implement this, ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras will be installed at all fuel stations to detect old vehicles and prevent them from refueling. Additionally, the process of vehicle seizure will also begin.

ANPR Cameras to Monitor Vehicles at Fuel Stations

ANPR cameras will automatically identify vehicles by reading their number plates. This move is expected to take more than 10 million vehicles off the roads across four states.

Easier Monitoring of Old Vehicles

CAQM revealed that Delhi has more than 6.1 million outdated vehicles, but only 60,000 have been seized so far. Similarly, Uttar Pradesh has over 1.2 million old vehicles, but only around 5,000 have been confiscated. Haryana has over 2.7 million old vehicles, with just 4,000 seized. In Rajasthan, about 600,000 outdated vehicles exist, but only around 2,000 have been confiscated. With ANPR cameras at fuel stations, the government will be able to enforce the rules more strictly and monitor old vehicles effectively.
