Many people in India are familiar with making UPI payments by scanning a QR code using their smartphones. But what about those who don’t have a mobile phone? To address this, the startup Proxgy has unveiled a product called ThumbPay, which allows payments using biometric authentication. This means customers can make payments at shops, petrol pumps, showrooms, and more by simply placing their thumb on the device.
How ThumbPay Works
ThumbPay connects Aadhaar authentication directly with the UPI payment system. There’s no need to link a phone, card, or wallet. To make a payment, the customer simply places their thumb on the device.
Here’s the process:
- The customer places their thumb on the device for scanning.
- The Aadhaar-enabled Payment System (AEPS) verifies the person using their fingerprint.
- Once authentication is complete, the UPI system processes a bank-to-bank payment.
This process eliminates the need for QR codes, smartphones, or cash.

Security and Hygiene Features
Proxgy has equipped ThumbPay with a certified fingerprint scanner that includes fraud detection capabilities. The device also features a small camera for verification and uses UV sterilization for hygiene purposes.
QR Code and NFC Support
To enhance functionality, ThumbPay also supports QR code and NFC payments. It comes with UPI Soundbox and 4G support, and even offers Wi-Fi connectivity.
Price of ThumbPay
ThumbPay is priced at around ₹2,000. It works on battery power as well, making it suitable for large showrooms, small shops, and even rural stores.
Essentially, the device connects directly to a bank account linked with Aadhaar. Anyone with an Aadhaar-linked bank account can make payments simply by placing their thumb on the device.
Availability for Shopkeepers
According to information from Proxgy, ThumbPay has completed its pilot trials. It now needs compliance clearance from UIDAI and NPCI. Once security approval is obtained, Proxgy plans to roll it out step-by-step for distribution.
