    Mandaadi Review: ★★★½☆ (3.5/5)

Mandaadi stands out among Tamil sports dramas by exploring a genuinely fresh sporting world, backed by a strong, understated performance from Soori and thrilling boat race sequences that keep you on the edge of your seat.

    Rating: ★★★½☆ (3.5/5)
    Genre: Sports Drama
    Language: Tamil
    Director: Mathimaran Pugazhendhi
Cast: Soori, Mahima Nambiar, Suhas, Sathyaraj

The sea can look perfectly calm one moment and turn dangerous the next, and that unpredictability becomes the perfect backdrop for director Mathimaran Pugazhendhi’s Mandaadi, a coastal sports drama centered around Muthukaali, known as Kaali, played by Soori.

Now living a quiet life in Chennai after being forced to leave his village years ago, Kaali gets pulled back into his past when his niece begs him to help a young man named Maari, who has run away from their village seeking justice.

As Kaali agrees to help Maari and return home, the film gradually reveals his own backstory. Twenty years earlier, Kaali was himself a sailboat racer, until a devastating betrayal by his once close friend Saattappuli, played by Suhas, turned the two men into bitter enemies.

That old wound resurfaces in the present, as a new boat race forces both men to confront their painful shared history, along with fresh questions of pride, revenge, and survival for their entire community.

What makes Mandaadi genuinely stand out among Tamil sports dramas is its setting. Set in the coastal villages of Ramanathapuram, the film centers on traditional sailboat racing, where the person leading a boat team is known as the mandaadi.

This is not simply a sport in these communities; it is deeply tied to identity, pride, and social standing, and the film treats that cultural weight with real authenticity.

The familiar underdog structure, someone written off eventually rising to prove themselves, is certainly present here too, but Mandaadi elevates it through the specificity of its world. The sea, the boats, the fishermen, and their everyday lives all feel woven naturally into Kaali’s journey, giving the film genuine emotional texture beyond its central rivalry.

At its heart, Mandaadi is about far more than just a competition between two men. It explores loyalty, community, and the deep bond between these coastal villages and the sea itself, using the sport as a metaphor for Kaali’s own attempt at redemption and his effort to heal a community still divided decades later. While the emotional beats may follow a familiar sports drama template, the way the boat races themselves are shot genuinely elevates the material, putting audiences right in the middle of the action.

Soori continues to make interesting choices as a leading man, following strong work in films like Viduthalai and Kottukkaali, and he fully commits to the physical demands this role requires. His performance as Kaali is understated rather than loud, giving real gravitas to his transformation from a broken man into a genuine leader.

Suhas is a genuine revelation as Saattappuli, bringing quiet menace and intensity to a character with clear negative shades, while Mahima Nambiar provides an important emotional anchor across the story’s various relationships.

Veteran actor Sathyaraj adds weight in a supporting role, and newcomer Mithun Jai Sankar leaves a strong impression as Maari, the character whose arrival sets the entire story in motion.

Visually, the film’s boat race sequences are genuinely captivating, thanks to cinematographer SR Kathir’s immersive camera work, particularly during a standout pre-interval action sequence.

GV Prakash Kumar’s background score also deserves real credit, elevating both the quieter coastal scenes and the tense racing portions effectively. The editing keeps things moving well enough overall, though a few stretches could have been tightened further.

In the end, Mandaadi is very much a Soori showcase, and he rises to the occasion, delivering a genuinely engaging watch anchored by a fresh setting and strong performances all around.
