Train travel is one of the most affordable and convenient modes of transportation for the common people in India. The recent changes made by IRCTC aim to prevent fraud in the ticket booking process. Here’s a summary of the new rules introduced by IRCTC:
1. OTP Verification Mandatory for Booking:
While booking a train ticket through the IRCTC website or mobile app, passengers will now receive a One-Time Password (OTP) on their registered mobile number. You must verify this OTP before proceeding to the payment page. This rule applies to all users, whether they are newly registered or existing users. The purpose is to ensure that tickets are booked by genuine passengers, improving both security and privacy.
2. Advance Booking Window Reduced to 90 Days:
From May 1st, passengers can now book tickets only up to 90 days in advance (earlier it used to be longer). This rule is already in effect, but it does not apply to festival or special trains.
3. Faster Refund Policy:
IRCTC has made the refund process quicker. Earlier, refunds for cancelled tickets used to take 5–7 days. Now, the amount will be credited to your account within just 48 hours (2 days). This rule applies to both online and counter bookings.

4. Ticket Validity for Booked Train Only:
Train tickets will now be valid only for the specific train and date mentioned on the ticket. If you’ve booked an e-ticket, carrying a physical printout is not mandatory. You can show the ticket on your mobile device while travelling.
5. Updated Cancellation Charges:
If you cancel a confirmed ticket more than 48 hours before the train’s departure, cancellation charges will apply as per class:
- First AC / Executive Class – ₹240
- Second AC / First Class – ₹200
- Third AC – ₹180
- Sleeper Class – ₹120
- Second Class – ₹60
These changes aim to streamline the ticketing process, reduce fraud, and make services more efficient for passengers.
