Hotstar’s Gaslight Movie Review

The narrative is devoid of thrills and chills. It rather follows anticipated lines without attempting to outdo its audience. The climax twist is likewise unimpressive. It succumbs to convenient writing. The ultimate payoff seems underwhelming. The film’s sluggish and tedious storyline is one of its major flaws. Scenes designed to terrify do not scare sufficiently, and ones meant to make one feel for the protagonist do not elicit feelings. Simply said, even knowing what the main character has gone through, you do not root for him or her.

There are a couple jump-scare scenes that are really effective. They are meticulously constructed and will catch viewers off guard anytime they appear. The film’s appearance and atmosphere are enhanced by the haunting background music. The camera work and cinematography are excellent. The same is true for the production design. The picture has a visual appeal, and the dark and gritty environment foreshadows what is to come. However, the film fails to manage a tempo that can put it in the category of a brilliant mystery thriller.

Sara Ali Khan’s acting abilities have been questioned quite a few times and it seems that she still needs to work long and hard on her acting skills. She looks unimpressive in this thriller that revolves around her. Vikrant Massey has delivered a fine performance and he is probably one of the only few reasons to watch this placid mystery. Chitrangada returns to the screen with a sincere performance but her character could have been written a lot better. The rest of the cast have done their job well but the direction of the movie does not justify their performances.

All in all, Gaslight is a film that you can easily afford to miss on Disney+ Hotstar.
