Does Travel Insurance Cover Flight Delays or Cancellations Caused by Fog?

Does Travel Insurance Cover Flight Delays or Cancellations Caused by Fog?

Dense fog often disrupts flight operations, causing delays, cancellations, and diversions, especially in regions like Delhi and North India where poor visibility is common. Travel insurance can offer protection against such disruptions, providing coverage for delays and cancellations caused by adverse weather conditions.

According to government data, flight cancellations affected thousands of passengers in January 2024. Around 68,352 passengers faced cancellations, while delays exceeding two hours impacted nearly 4.82 lakh travellers. Weather-related problems accounted for 83% of the 3.7% domestic flight cancellations during this period.

Many travel insurance policies cover flight delays that go beyond a certain time limit, typically between 1.5 and 4 hours. However, travellers should carefully examine the policy terms, as definitions of “departure time” can differ. Some insurers calculate this based on when the parking brakes are released, while others may use the time the aircraft leaves the gate. Additionally, some policies offer “Cancellation by Operator” coverage for cancellations caused by extreme weather events like fog.

It is important to note that cancellations due to regulatory changes or government restrictions may not be covered. Similarly, if travellers receive advance notice of significant delays—usually six hours or more—the policy may not classify it as a covered event. To ensure adequate protection, travellers should review the policy details, including exclusions and waiting periods. Policies with “Common Carrier Delay” and “Cancellation by Operator” coverage may offer broader protection against such disruptions.

    How to File a Claim

The process for claiming compensation can vary between insurers. Travellers should familiarise themselves with the claims procedure before purchasing a policy to avoid issues later.

Many insurers are integrated with flight tracking systems, enabling them to automatically notify travellers if their flight is delayed beyond the specified limit or cancelled. Typically, travellers need to share their boarding pass details along with banking information, and claims can often be settled within a day. For international claims, travellers may need to contact the insurer directly through helpline numbers or email addresses mentioned in the policy documents.

However, it is crucial to remember that not all situations involving fog-related delays or cancellations may be covered. Minor delays that fall below the minimum time threshold mentioned in the policy, which is often between 1.5 and 4 hours, are usually excluded.

Similarly, cancellations caused by government-imposed travel restrictions or weather advisories may not qualify for reimbursement. To avoid surprises, travellers should thoroughly read the policy terms and conditions, including exclusions and limitations, to ensure they have sufficient coverage for their journey.
