Our body parts often give early signs about our health—what is working well and what is not. Dark circles under the eyes or redness on the cheeks may seem like small changes, but they can point towards internal liver problems. Dr Rajesh Padhan told TN how changes visible on the face can be warning signs of liver issues and why ignoring them can be dangerous. Here is what he explained:
Dark circles under the eyes – A sign of weak liver detox
If dark circles do not fade even after proper sleep, the liver could be the reason. According to the doctor, the liver helps remove toxins from the body. When it does not work properly, toxins build up, fatigue increases, and blood circulation is affected. This can show up as dark circles under the eyes.
Redness on the cheeks – Indicates hormonal imbalance
Sudden or unusual redness on the cheeks is not just natural blushing. Dr Padhan says that poor liver function can increase estrogen levels, which may cause redness on the cheeks. This is commonly seen in cases of alcoholic fatty liver.
Dry and itchy patches – Not just a skin problem
Dry or itchy patches on the face should not be ignored as a simple skin issue. The doctor explains that this can happen due to the buildup of bile salts under the skin or a lack of essential nutrients—both linked to liver dysfunction.

Jaundice – Yellowing as a clear warning
Yellowing of the skin or eyes is the most well-known sign of liver disease. This happens due to a buildup of bilirubin, a waste product that the liver normally processes. Jaundice can indicate fatty liver or other serious liver conditions.
Facial swelling – Fluid retention in the body
Swelling or puffiness on the face can be a sign of serious liver problems. When the liver cannot maintain fluid balance in the body, excess water starts accumulating, which becomes visible as facial swelling.
Acne – Not only caused by skin issues
Repeated acne around the jawline and cheeks may be linked to the liver. Dr Padhan explains that weak liver function leads to hormonal imbalance and toxin buildup, which can increase acne.
Dull or lifeless skin – A sign of fatty liver
If the face starts looking dull or lifeless, it could be pointing towards fatty liver. When the liver fails to detox properly and manage metabolism, the skin loses its natural glow.
When should you see a doctor?
According to the doctor, these facial signs often appear along with stomach discomfort, extreme tiredness, or weakness. In such cases, medical advice should be taken immediately. Timely tests, a balanced diet, and regular exercise can help prevent further complications.
Always remember—your face does not only reflect your emotions, it also mirrors your internal health. Pay attention to these signs and prioritise liver health to avoid long-term problems.
