‘Cashero’ Review: A Unique K-Drama Where Superpowers, Money, and the Common Man Collide

‘Cashero’ Review: A Unique K-Drama Where Superpowers, Money, and the Common Man Collide

‘Cashero’ revolves around Kang Sang-woong, an ordinary government employee who suddenly gains a very unusual superpower — his physical strength increases or decreases based on the amount of cash he is carrying in his pocket. This single idea instantly sets the series apart from conventional superhero stories, where power usually comes from birth, experiments, or sheer willpower. In ‘Cashero’, money itself becomes the source of strength, turning everyday financial reality into a life-or-death factor.

Alongside Sang-woong, the show introduces a quirky team: his practical and level-headed fiancée, a lawyer whose powers activate only when he drinks alcohol, and a young woman who can use telekinesis by consuming calories. Together, they face a mysterious organisation that targets people with special abilities. Through this mix, ‘Cashero’ blends superhero action with satire, social commentary, and emotional drama in a way that feels both entertaining and thoughtful.

    Direction and Overall Tone

Director Lee Chang-min deliberately keeps ‘Cashero’ away from the glossy, larger-than-life Marvel-style superhero formula. Instead, the series adopts a grounded, reality-oriented tone where heroism is constantly weighed against financial stress, middle-class struggles, and moral dilemmas. The show feels rooted in everyday life, making the extraordinary elements more impactful.

The narrative balances seriousness with subtle humour, especially through the irony of its core idea — a man who wants to save others but must think twice every time, knowing that heroism literally empties his wallet. This careful balance ensures that the series never becomes overly comedic or excessively dark, maintaining a consistent and engaging mood throughout.

    Performances and Characters

Lee Jun-ho delivers a relatable performance as Kang Sang-woong, portraying him as an ordinary young man burdened by sudden responsibility. His character reflects the desire of the common man to do good, while being constantly held back by financial limitations. The inner conflict between morality and money is clearly visible in his performance.

Kim Hye-jun, as Kim Min-sook, plays a realistic and practical partner who keeps the story grounded. While she openly questions the efficiency of Sang-woong’s power, she remains emotionally supportive, adding depth to their relationship. Kim Hyang-gi’s calorie-powered telekinetic and Kim Byung-chul’s alcohol-activated lawyer bring humour, variety, and sharp satire to the team, making the superhero world feel fresh and unconventional.

    Themes: Money, Power, and Morality

The most compelling aspect of ‘Cashero’ lies in its exploration of the relationship between money and power. Cash is not just currency here — it directly controls the hero’s strength, limitations, and sense of responsibility. The series raises uncomfortable but important questions: What happens when goodness itself depends on financial capacity? Does the ability to help others become a privilege only for those who can afford it?

Through secret organisations, power misuse, and corporate influence, the show also comments on class gaps, control, and ethical compromises. These themes elevate ‘Cashero’ beyond a simple superhero drama into a meaningful social narrative.

    Production Value and Release

Produced by SLL and Drama House Studio, ‘Cashero’ is based on a popular Kakao webtoon, which is reflected in its visual style and world-building. The series benefits from an existing fanbase and a well-defined aesthetic. Filming began in December 2023 and concluded by the end of 2024, with the show officially included in Netflix’s 2025 lineup for a global release.

Its availability on a global OTT platform allows ‘Cashero’ to reach international audiences, complete with subtitles in multiple languages. With strong production values, a webtoon foundation, and Netflix’s global reach, the series has the potential to become one of the most talked-about Korean dramas of 2025.

    Verdict for Viewers

‘Cashero’ is a refreshing choice for audiences looking for something different from routine romance-heavy or fantasy-driven K-dramas. It offers superhero action, emotional depth, realistic relationships, and — most importantly — a money-centric theme that strongly resonates with the middle-class experience.

If you enjoy shows that question the superhero genre, highlight social realities, and still manage to entertain, ‘Cashero’ deserves a spot on your watchlist.
