Beware: Drinking Coffee After Exercise Could Risk Your Blood Pressure

Nowadays, everyone enjoys working out, but some habits can harm your health. Many people have a routine of drinking coffee or tea as soon as they wake up to shake off sleepiness. This is because caffeine blocks the action of adenosine, which helps wake you up and increases alertness.

It’s common to drink coffee before a workout to enhance performance. However, some people also consume coffee after exercising, which can be harmful. Drinking coffee post-workout may lead to increased blood pressure and heart rate. Let’s explore why consuming coffee after exercise may not be advisable.

The Impact of Drinking Coffee After Exercise:

The key issue is metabolism. If your body effectively metabolizes coffee, there might not be any harm. But if it doesn’t, you could face blood pressure problems. There may also be a genetic link between caffeine, blood pressure, and heart attacks.

Caffeine activates the stress hormone cortisol, which helps in the secretion of adrenaline. Coffee contains a vasoconstrictor that narrows blood vessels. After exercise, your body remains in a physical stress mode with an elevated heart rate. An increased heart rate can raise blood pressure. Studies show that blood pressure can stay elevated for up to three hours after exercise.

Drinking coffee during this period can further increase your blood pressure because your body needs to rest after a workout. Consuming a stimulating caffeine drink can raise both blood pressure and heart rate, which could be harmful.

For these reasons, it’s better to drink coffee before exercising rather than after.
