Aadhaar and UPI are known as the pillars of Digital India. Now, the government is preparing to launch another digital identity system. Every home or location in the country may soon receive a unique digital ID. This digital ID will act like an Aadhaar number, but for houses and places. Just as the Aadhaar number is essential for identifying individuals, this new digital ID will serve as an identifier for homes and physical locations.
The name of this new system is Digital Postal Index Number or DIGIPIN. It is being developed by the Department of Posts under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister’s Office. DIGIPIN will be a 10-character alphanumeric code that will accurately represent the location of any home or place. This system will be part of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and aims to digitally manage address information, improve service delivery, and ensure data security.
DIGIPIN will be different from the traditional PIN code, offering much higher accuracy. It will also work effectively in rural areas, slums, forests, and hilly regions. The government plans to roll out this initiative in the coming months. A draft of the system will soon be released for public feedback. The goal is to finalise it by the end of 2025, and a special law may be passed during the Winter Session of Parliament.
