If you missed Aasha in theatres, you now get a second chance. The Malayalam psychological thriller, led by the veteran Urvashi, is heading to ZEE5 on October 16, 2026. It first hit the big screen on September 11, and now it is ready to reach viewers at home.
The film will also stream in dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, so you do not need to know Malayalam to catch it.
What is the story about?
Urvashi plays Aasha, a widowed mother who lives with her younger daughter, Anagha, while their new home is still being built. Life has not been kind to her. She carries old trauma and struggles with serious insomnia, and that has left her paranoid, controlling, and quick to lose her temper.
Everything changes after a small road accident one night. It brings her face to face with Jeemon, a volatile truck driver played by Joju George. What looks like a simple argument slowly turns into something much bigger.
When Jeemon later shows up near her family in a threatening way, and Anagha suffers a sudden accident, Aasha becomes sure he is to blame. Driven by fear, she takes a drastic step that sets off a chain of events nobody can control.
I will stop there to avoid spoilers, but the film is less about who is right and more about what fear can push a person to do. It looks at how stubbornness, pride, and the urge to protect your own can blur the line between right and wrong.
A different kind of thriller
The makers have said they did not want to build a typical revenge drama. Instead, the story leans on the butterfly effect, the idea that a tiny, forgettable decision can lead to huge consequences later.
Director Safar Sanal has described it as a story of what happens when an ordinary mother is pushed into an extraordinary situation.
This is also Safar Sanal’s debut as a director, which makes the film’s confident tone even more interesting.
Cast and crew
Along with Urvashi and Joju George, the film features Aishwarya Lekshmi, Lakshmi Menon, Bhagyalakshmi, Vijayaraghavan, Ajayan Adat, Joy Mathew and Alexander Prasanth in important roles. Joju George, Ramesh Girija, and Safar Sanal wrote the screenplay, and Vinayaka Ajith produced the film.
On the technical side, Midhun Mukundan and Govind Vasantha composed the music, Madhu Neelakandan handled the cinematography, and Shan Mohammed took care of the editing.
What the platform says
ZEE5 has been vocal about backing stories that go against the usual formula. Lloyd C. Xavier, the platform’s business head for Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam content, said the film stays with you after the credits because it does not tell viewers what to think. He also praised Urvashi’s performance for showing the character’s weakness, strength, and contradictions in a very real way.
Should you watch it?
If you enjoy character-driven thrillers that make you question your own judgement, Aasha seems like a strong pick. It is not a fast action film. It is a slow burn that builds pressure through one mother’s choices, and that is what makes it so uncomfortable and gripping.
And if you are planning your streaming weekend, there is plenty more to line up. For something very different, Netflix has a tense survival drama coming, and you can read about it in our piece on The Storm release date, which follows a 45th birthday dinner that turns into a nightmare during a violent storm.
Aasha arrives on ZEE5 on October 16, 2026. Keep your lights low, your phone away, and be ready for a story that asks tough questions.
