During this time, the government led by Indira Gandhi exerted authoritarian control over various aspects of society. The press was heavily censored, and journalists faced restrictions on reporting. Many opposition leaders and activists, including Jayaprakash Narayan, Morarji Desai, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, were arrested and jailed.
