Indian cinema has given us stories about cricketers, wrestlers, boxers, and plenty more. But a sumo wrestler? That is something we have not seen before. ZEE5 is now bringing that story to the screen with Sumo Didi, and the trailer has just dropped.
The film is inspired by the life of Hetal Dave, who is described as India’s first and only professional female sumo wrestler. It is the kind of real-life story that makes you wonder why nobody told it earlier.
A woman who refuses to shrink
The trailer is led by Shriyam Bhagnani, and she looks like a completely different person here. To play Hetal, she put on a lot of weight and muscle, and she also learned the technical side of sumo wrestling. You can see the effort in every frame. She carries a rough, stubborn kind of grit that holds the whole trailer together.
The story follows a woman who wants to make every single pound of her body count. Along the way she has to fight many battles outside the ring too, including society’s judgement, fat shaming and money problems. Her goal is big. She wants to represent India on the international stage in Japan, the home of sumo itself.
Humour and heart in the same frame
What works well is the mix of tones. The trailer has strong training montages that show the sweat and pain of the sport. But it also finds room for light, funny moments, so it never feels too heavy.
It also speaks directly about the way people in India talk about body weight. Hetal is often mocked for her size, and the film turns that around. The thing the world calls a flaw becomes her biggest athletic strength. That idea is the emotional centre of the film, and it is what makes the trailer stand out.
More about family than glamour
The trailer also hints at a strong support system around Hetal. The supporting cast seems to bring warmth and some real family drama, which gives the story more depth than a usual sports film. It looks like the film cares about resilience first and wrestling second.
There is no flashy big-budget spectacle here, and it does not seem to want one. Instead, it feels like a quiet, sincere film that could grow on viewers slowly. It also looks like a story about breaking old boundaries and reclaiming self-worth, which many people will connect with.
More to watch right now
If you are building a watchlist for the weekend, there is plenty to pick from. For a late-night thriller, take a look at our Gajab Raat trailer breakdown, where Manoj Bajpayee plays a cop caught between money and doing the right thing.
And if you want something lighter and funnier, Yami Gautam’s festive film is already out in theatres. Our Nayyi Navelli review will tell you whether the new bahu is really a daayan and if the film is worth your time.
Should you wait for Sumo Didi?
Based on the trailer, yes. Sports dramas work best when the emotion feels real, and this one seems to have that. It has a true story at its core, a lead actor who looks fully committed, and a message that does not feel forced.
It might not be the loudest release this season, but sometimes the quieter stories stay with you the longest. Sumo Didi looks like one of those, a film about a woman whose story is worth telling and an actor who looks ready to tell it.
