Some characters never really leave you. Shivam Pandit is one of them. When Awarapan released in 2007, it flopped at the box office, but over the years it quietly grew into one of Bollywood’s most loved cult classics. Its music, its pain, its broken hero — an entire generation carried that film in their hearts. So when Awarapan 2 was announced, the question was simple: can you touch a memory this precious without breaking it?

The good news is that Awarapan 2 mostly gets it right. Directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Bhatt under the Vishesh Films banner, the sequel understands exactly why the original became a cult favourite. It is not trying to be a louder film. It is trying to be a wounded one, and Emraan Hashmi makes sure that wound feels real.

    The Story

Nearly two decades after the events of the first film, Shivam Pandit (Emraan Hashmi) has been living in isolation, far away from the world of crime that took everything from him. But the past never lets men like Shivam rest. Circumstances drag him back into a brutal underworld, and this time the fight is not just for survival — it is for redemption. Along the way, his path crosses with a mysterious woman (Disha Patani) whose situation echoes ghosts from his own past, while Shabana Azmi appears in a pivotal role that anchors the film’s emotional core.

The central question of the original returns in a new form: can a man drowning in sin still find his way to peace? As Shivam himself warns in the film’s defining line — this time, either the awarapan ends, or he does.

    First Half

The first half is a slow burn, and honestly, that is the right choice. Kakkar spends time re-establishing Shivam — older, quieter, more broken than we remember him. For fans of the original, these portions hit hard. Every silence, every glance carries the weight of Aliyah’s memory, and the recreated version of Toh Phir Aao by Mithoon, with fresh lyrics by Sayeed Quadri, arrives at exactly the right moment to break your heart all over again.

Newcomers who haven’t seen the 2007 film might take a little longer to connect, since the film leans heavily on callbacks. But once Shivam is pulled back into the crime world, the film finds its rhythm, and the pre-interval stretch delivers a genuinely strong hook.

    Second Half

The second half is where the action takes over — raw, brutal and well-staged, with Hashmi throwing himself into the sequences with surprising physicality. But the film never lets the action drown the emotion, and that balance is its biggest strength. Disha Patani’s track gains meaning here, and Shabana Azmi’s scenes give the story its moral weight.

Not everything lands. A few plot turns feel convenient, and the film occasionally stretches its brooding tone longer than needed. But the climax pulls everything together into an emotional payoff that stays true to the spirit of the original. Fans walking in with 19 years of attachment will walk out satisfied — and more than a little moved.

    Performances

Emraan Hashmi owns every frame of this film. This is a masterclass in playing a broken man — restrained, intense and heartbreakingly vulnerable in equal measure. Shivam Pandit remains one of his career-best characters, and Hashmi slips back into that skin like he never left. It is easily his most powerful performance in years.

Disha Patani gets one of the more substantial roles of her career and handles it with sincerity, especially in the emotional stretches. Shabana Azmi is dependably excellent in her limited but crucial screen time, while Suvinder Vicky adds real menace as the antagonist force in Shivam’s new world.

    Direction, Music and Technicals

Nitin Kakkar had the toughest job here — following Mohit Suri’s cult original without imitating it — and he handles it with respect. The film looks moody and atmospheric, the action is grounded rather than cartoonish, and the pacing, barring a few stretches, holds. The music deserves special mention: rather than remixing the classics, Mithoon carries their soul forward, and the soundtrack is easily among the film’s biggest assets.

    Final Verdict

Awarapan 2 is a heartfelt, well-acted sequel that honours its cult predecessor instead of exploiting it. It may not fully recreate the lightning-in-a-bottle magic of 2007, but Emraan Hashmi’s towering performance and the film’s emotional sincerity make it a worthy watch. If Shivam Pandit ever meant something to you, this one deserves your ticket this weekend.
