Awarapan 2 Trailer Out — CBFC Certificate, Runtime, Cuts, and All You Need to Know

Emraan Hashmi is back in the world that made him iconic. The censor board has cleared the film with a U/A 16+ certificate and a 2 hour 20 minute runtime — here is what changed and what to expect

Awarapan 2 Trailer Out — CBFC Certificate, Runtime, Cuts, and All You Need to Know

If you have been following Awarapan 2 since its announcement, you already know this one carries significant weight. The original Awarapan in 2007 was one of Emraan Hashmi’s most celebrated films — a dark, brooding underworld drama that found a devoted audience and cemented his image as Bollywood’s go-to actor for morally complex, emotionally raw characters.

Nearly two decades later, he returns to that world with Awarapan 2, and the film now has its CBFC clearance. The Central Board of Film Certification granted the film a U/A 16+ certificate on August 5, 2026, following several required modifications. The certified runtime is 2 hours, 20 minutes and 20 seconds. The film releases in cinemas on August 14, 2026.

    What the CBFC Asked For

The Examining Committee of the CBFC reviewed the film and came back with a set of requirements before granting certification. Here is what was changed:

    Disclaimers and Tickers

The makers were asked to add on-screen disclaimers for the depiction of drug use and child trafficking — both of which appear to be significant thematic elements in the film’s story. A similar disclaimer ticker was required for a smoking scene, in keeping with the standard rules that have been in place since 2021. An anti-drug static ticker was also ordered for the bottom right corner of the screen during any scenes showing drug consumption.

The film’s title was also required to be displayed in Hindi, as per CBFC regulations currently in effect.

    Language Changes

Certain words classified as obscene were required to be replaced in both the audio track and the subtitles. This is a fairly standard modification for films dealing with underworld or crime subject matter.

    Violence Cuts

In the second half of the film, one violent scene was reduced by 50 percent. Extreme violence was deleted entirely from three separate scenes. These are more significant modifications than the language changes, and they suggest the film’s original cut had sequences that pushed well past what a U/A 16+ certificate allows.

    Drug Scene Removal

A scene depicting drug snorting at approximately the midpoint of the film was removed entirely.

    End Credits Adjustment

The end credits were adjusted to sync properly with the film’s music — a relatively minor technical change that does not affect the content itself.

    The Final Runtime

    CategoryDuration
    Total deletions ordered4 minutes
    Replacements ordered20 seconds
Certified final runtime2 hours, 20 minutes, 20 seconds

The certified runtime of 140 minutes and 20 seconds gives the film a solid running length for the kind of story it appears to be telling — long enough to develop its characters and build its atmosphere without overstaying its welcome.

The Cast and What We Know About the Film

Awarapan 2 stars Emraan Hashmi, Disha Patani, and Shabana Azmi in what appears to be a dark crime drama with themes of drug trafficking and child exploitation woven into its narrative.

Hashmi returning to the Awarapan universe is the central draw. His work in the 2007 original remains one of his most complete performances — measured, internalised, and carrying a genuine emotional weight that made the film more than just a genre exercise. The sequel has clearly been made with similar ambitions, given the mature content that required significant CBFC attention.

Disha Patani’s inclusion adds a different energy, and Shabana Azmi’s presence in any cast is a reliable indicator that the material is being taken seriously on the performance side.

    The Box Office Context

Awarapan 2 is the only Hindi film releasing this month that avoided an A certificate — which is both a commercial advantage and an interesting reflection of how the CBFC modifications have shaped the final product.

Its primary box office clash is with Batwara 1947, the Sunny Deol-led film about Partition that has received an A rating. Looking further ahead, Toxic arrives on August 26 and Mirzapur: The Movie on September 4 — both expected to carry A certificates. That landscape gives Awarapan 2 a reasonably clear run at the August 14 Independence Day weekend, which is traditionally one of the strongest box office windows of the year for Hindi releases.

Independence Day weekend audiences typically respond to films with strong emotional or patriotic content, but they also respond to star power and genre drama — both of which Awarapan 2 brings.

    Why This Release Matters

There is a specific nostalgia attached to the Awarapan name that works in the sequel’s favour. Audiences who were teenagers or young adults in 2007 are now in their thirties and early forties, and many of them carry genuine affection for the original. A sequel announced nearly 20 years later, with the same lead actor and apparently the same tonal DNA, carries the kind of anticipation that marketing alone cannot manufacture.

Whether Awarapan 2 delivers on that anticipation will be determined on August 14 in cinemas. What the CBFC process confirms is that the film takes its subject matter seriously enough to have required meaningful modifications — which suggests it was not made as a safe, commercially calculated follow-up but as something with genuine ambition and edge.

Awarapan 2 releases in cinemas across India on August 14, 2026.
