A Toxic Love Story Review - The Victim You Think You Know Is Not Who You Expect

    A Toxic Love Story Review: ★★★½☆ (3.5/5)

A Toxic Love Story is a gripping true crime documentary that completely reverses your expectations halfway through. It tells the story of a newlywed couple, a cyberstalking case, and a shocking scheme that ruined an innocent woman’s life for months. The film is a little over-produced in typical Netflix style, but the emotional weight of the real story makes it worth watching.

    Rating: ★★★½☆ (3.5/5)
    Platform: Netflix
    Genre: True Crime Documentary
    Runtime: 88 minutes
    Director: Alexandra Lacey
    Release Date: July 22, 2026

Netflix has built an entire empire on true crime documentaries, and at this point it feels like a new one drops every few weeks. Most of them follow the same formula. A crime happens, police investigate, and someone gets punished. A Toxic Love Story starts out looking exactly like that kind of film. Then it does something most of these documentaries never attempt. It flips the entire story on its head.

The case begins in January 2016 when US Marshal Ian Diaz meets Angela Connell online. They fall fast, marry within a month, and move into a condo he once shared with his ex-girlfriend, Michelle Hadley. Soon after, Angela starts receiving disturbing, threatening emails from someone calling themselves Lilithistruth.

The harassment gets worse over time, including horrifying images and even a fake Craigslist ad posting Angela’s face for a sexual assault fantasy. The couple points fingers at Michelle, and because Ian holds a federal law enforcement position, the police move quickly. Michelle is arrested within a week.

If the film stopped there, it would just be another forgettable Netflix true crime entry. But director Alexandra Lacey structures the story in two parts. The first half tells the case entirely from the Diaz couple’s side, using police body cam footage, archival recordings, and testimony from people close to Ian. It plays right into the tired but familiar narrative of the crazy jealous ex.

Then, nearly a decade later, Michelle sits down to tell her own side of the story, and everything the audience believed gets pulled apart.

What follows is genuinely stunning. Without spoiling every detail, the documentary reveals a far darker and more calculated scheme than anyone would expect, one that exposes how easily the legal system can be manipulated when one side holds more institutional power and credibility than the other.

Michelle’s account of losing her freedom and reputation is heartbreaking to watch, and her strength in finally telling her story years later gives the film its emotional center.

The documentary does not shy away from bigger questions either. It touches on how the justice system often gives more weight to a man’s word, how media loves a sensational story that paints men as victims, and how institutions fail to properly investigate before ruining someone’s life. These themes give the film more depth than a typical shock-driven true crime special.

Where the documentary stumbles a bit is in its style. Like most Netflix productions of this genre, it leans heavily on dramatic reenactments with actors, along with unnecessary filler shots of people staring out of windows or walking in slow motion.

It is a formula that has become almost a cliché of the genre at this point, and viewers who have seen enough of these documentaries will recognize the pattern instantly. It does not ruin the experience, but it does make the film feel less grounded than it could have been.

The pacing works in the film’s favor too. At under 90 minutes, it never overstays its welcome or pads itself out the way longer true crime series often do. Every reveal lands with purpose, and the compact runtime keeps the tension tight from start to finish.

In the end, A Toxic Love Story succeeds because it is not really about who did what. It is about how quickly an innocent person can be destroyed when the system trusts the wrong voice. That makes it stand out from the crowded field of Netflix true crime content, even with its familiar production tricks.

If you enjoy true crime documentaries that keep you guessing and leave you angry at the right people by the end, this one is well worth the watch.

A Toxic Love Story is now streaming on Netflix.
