Drishyam 3 on Amazon Prime Video: 5 Reasons to Watch Georgekutty’s Final Chapter

Drishyam 3 on Amazon Prime Video - 5 Reasons to Watch Georgekuttys Final Chapter

Some franchises are too overstaying their welcome, and others know just when to take their bow. But Drishyam has always been a part of the latter group, and with the release of Drishyam 3 on Amazon Prime Video, Mohanlal leads Georgekutty on a fitting journey.

This is the last chapter in the story of a family man who has been outsmarting police investigations, saving his family at great personal expense, and somehow outsmarting his way to the other side of every crisis since 2013. Here’s why Mohanlal’s performance makes it worth your weekend.

Drishyam 3 on Prime Video: 5 Reasons to Watch Mohanlal’s Film

Drishyam 3 on Amazon Prime Video

    1. The Wait of Years Finally Shows

The thing that is so interesting about this performance is that Georgekutty still has his good brain. It is because of this: he is tired.

Mohanlal’s Georgekutty is no longer the untouchable mastermind after he has been running away from the law and shielding those he cherished for over ten years. He plays him as a father who’s been holding a very big secret for years, and you can see that fatigue in each of the scenes. It’s not just that this isn’t the self-possessed, brimming-with-confidence guy that we saw in the earlier movies; it’s a more genuine and more human one. The cracks can be seen now, and because of that, he is more interesting to watch.

    2. A Masterclass in Saying Less

It’s very rare for Mohanlal to have to shout to hold a scene, but Drishyam 3 does exactly that, very beautifully.

He uses little changes of voice, short silences, and slight movements to build the tension, not dramatic outbursts. A realistic and subdued style of performance which needs a certain amount of control. Still, he’s the Georgekutty that’s always calculated with a low-key, middle-class vulnerability that feels entirely real. It’s a show that’s as much about what it doesn’t say as what it does.

    3. The Game Has Changed, and So Has the Tension

It seems that Georgekutty has strived to find peace, but all of this begins to unravel once more.

He’s subjected to a whole new form of pressure, one that doesn’t adhere to the rules. It’s interesting to watch Mohanlal work the new tactics he has developed against the unrelenting opposition and the organised police effort. It’s nice to see someone that’s already shown his brain to be amazing having to flex again, with even more at stake and no easy gets left.

    4. Closing a Chapter Audiences Have Followed for Over a Decade

But since the original Drishyam was released in 2013, Georgekutty has evolved into one of his favourite characters in Indian cinema, and he has become an everyman simply by doing his best to save those who love him.

Mohanlal’s consistent performance in this role in the three films has certainly given the viewers a sense of closure to a story they have been following for years. He’s back with familiar faces making a return, so there’s a little more of a sense of nostalgia to savor for longtime fans. The ending of this last chapter reminds me more of bidding farewell to someone I’ve followed for more than ten years than to a new movie.

    5. At Its Core, It’s Still a Story About Family

Take out all the drama, the cops, the brilliant plotting and Drishyam is all about one thing — a father who will do anything to save his family.

The film’s heart lies with Mohanlal’s chemistry with his on-screen family. His protective instincts seem real and not an act of marketing and that’s what makes Drishyam go beyond being a clever crime thriller. Hence, audiences have been hooked on Georgekutty’s story for more than 10 years, for it is a profound human story with all the elements of love, sacrifice and a parent’s willingness to go the extra mile for their kids.

Drishyam 3 isn’t just another sequel that’s desperately trying to push itself through another installment. It’s like a real ending, with a performance that makes you exactly know why Indian cinema’s one of the greats in Mohanlal. This last chapter is well worth reading if you’ve been along with Georgekutty from the start.

Drishyam 3 is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
