Important Update for Indians Traveling to Iran: Visa-Free Entry Suspended for Ordinary Passport Holders

A major update has come for Indian citizens who plan to travel to Iran. Iran has suspended the visa-free entry facility for ordinary Indian passport holders. India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed this information on Monday and also explained the reason behind the decision.

    Why Was This Decision Taken?

According to the MEA, there have been several incidents where Indian citizens were misled with false promises of jobs or assured safe transit to other countries, and then taken to Iran. The ministry revealed that many Indians were lured with fake job offers and transported to Iran under false pretences. These rising cases prompted the suspension of the visa-free entry system.

From When Is the Facility Suspended?

Iran has suspended the visa exemption facility for ordinary Indian passport holders from 22 November. The MEA said the step has been taken to prevent misuse of the visa-free travel system.

How Can Indians Enter Iran Now?

From now on, Indian citizens holding an ordinary passport will require a visa to enter Iran. The MEA stated that many people used the visa-free facility to reach Iran, and upon arrival, several were kidnapped for ransom by traffickers or criminal groups.

    Government Issues a Warning

The Ministry of External Affairs has also issued a strong warning for Indian travellers:

    • Anyone planning to visit Iran must remain extremely cautious.
    • Avoid any agents or middlemen who promise visa-free travel or onward movement to third countries through Iran.
    • Do not trust job offers or travel packages that sound suspicious or too easy.

    Why Is This Significant?

A large number of Indians travel to Iran in search of employment. Unfortunately, many become victims of fraudulent agents who trap them for money and put their lives at risk. Once outside India, many of these individuals find themselves helpless, and criminals take advantage of their vulnerable situation.

In summary: The visa-free entry facility for ordinary Indian passport holders travelling to Iran is officially suspended from 22 November. Travellers must now apply for a visa and remain very careful of fraudulent agents or suspicious travel offers.
