Delhi Government: Petrol Two-Wheelers to be Banned after August 2026, No New Registration will be Allowed

The BJP-led government has set a target to reduce pollution in Delhi by ensuring that 95 percent of all new registered vehicles are electric by 2027 and 98 percent by 2030. However, the target of 25 percent EV registrations for 2024 was not met on time. Meanwhile, the Delhi government has announced that from August 2026, new petrol, diesel, or CNG two-wheelers will not be registered in the city. This decision is expected to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles. To encourage people to switch from petrol to EVs, the government is also offering incentives to electric vehicle buyers.

Additionally, the government has set a goal to introduce 3,000 electric buses on Delhi’s roads by the end of this year. From August 2025, registration of CNG three-wheelers will also be banned, and all CNG auto permits will be converted into e-auto permits. Furthermore, CNG autos older than 10 years must be replaced with electric vehicles.

    Expansion of Charging Infrastructure

To support the growing number of electric vehicles, the government plans to set up more than 13,200 charging stations across Delhi. Charging points will be made mandatory in new buildings and public spaces. Additionally, fast-charging corridors will be developed along major roads such as Ring Road and Outer Ring Road to facilitate EV charging.

To encourage the expansion of private and semi-public charging stations, the government will provide capital subsidies. Another major step includes converting all municipal garbage collection vehicles operated by MCD, DJB, and other urban bodies to electric by 2027.

Financial Support Through State EV Fund

To support EV buyers, the Delhi government will create a state EV fund through green levy, pollution cess, and aggregator license fees. Additionally, incentives will be provided for scrapping old vehicles or retrofitting them with electric powertrains.
