18-Year-Old D Gukesh Creates History: Becomes New World Chess Champion, Ends China's Dominance

D Gukesh has achieved a historic milestone in chess, becoming the youngest World Chess Champion. The 18-year-old ended China’s dominance and equaled a remarkable record held by former Indian chess master Viswanathan Anand.

The final of the World Chess Championship 2024 was played on Thursday in Singapore. In this crucial match, D Gukesh faced defending champion and Chinese chess master Ding Liren. Gukesh defeated Liren in the 14th game of the title match to claim the championship.

Gukesh Joins Viswanathan Anand’s Elite Club

In the championship match, Gukesh played with black pieces against Ding Liren. Throughout the game, the young Indian displayed exceptional skills, dominating his Chinese opponent in every move. Gukesh ended China’s reign in chess and emerged as the new World Chess Champion.

At just 18 years old, Gukesh has now become the youngest World Chess Champion in history. Additionally, he is the second Indian to win this prestigious title, joining Viswanathan Anand in this elite achievement. Anand, a five-time World Champion, last won the title in 2013.

Pressure on Ding Liren Led to a Crucial Mistake

The intensity of the match showcased how Gukesh outclassed Ding Liren. At one point, the game seemed to be heading toward a tiebreak. However, Gukesh maintained his composure and continued to pressurize his opponent.

Under immense pressure, Ding Liren made a critical error, which Gukesh capitalized on. The Indian prodigy delivered a decisive blow, securing victory in the last classical game of the match. Gukesh finished with 7.5 points, surpassing Ding Liren’s 6.5 points to clinch the title.

    Youngest World Chess Champion

With this victory, the world of chess has crowned its youngest-ever champion. Before Gukesh, legendary Russian player Garry Kasparov held the record, winning the World Chess Championship at the age of 22 in 1985 by defeating Anatoly Karpov.

Now, the chess world celebrates its new and youngest champion, D Gukesh, who has set a new benchmark in the sport’s history.
