Every day, crores of people travel by train in India. A large number of them undertake long-distance journeys where food becomes an essential part of the travel experience. Those who don’t carry home-cooked meals usually rely either on food available at stations or meals served onboard through the train’s pantry. If you’re one of those passengers who depend on station or train meals, this update is important for you. The Ministry of Railways has shared the official price and full menu of the standard veg meal (casserole) on its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Many Vendors Overcharge Passengers
While some travellers bring food from home, many are unable to do so and have to buy meals during their journey. Unfortunately, a large number of these passengers are unaware of the officially set food prices by Indian Railways. As a result, some vendors or pantry staff take advantage and charge more than the approved rate. That’s why the Ministry’s clarification is crucial for passengers.
Veg Meal Price is ₹80 Onboard, ₹70 at Stations
According to the tweet from the Ministry of Railways, the price of a standard veg meal (casserole) is ₹70 at railway stations and ₹80 when served on the train. The Ministry also shared the full menu for this meal, which includes:
- Plain rice (150 grams)
- Thick dal or sambar (150 grams)
- Curd (80 grams)
- 2 parathas or 4 rotis (100 grams)
- Cooked vegetables (100 grams)
- Pickle packet (12 grams)

What to Do If You Are Overcharged
If you’re ever asked to pay more than the fixed price or notice that the food items served are less than what’s listed in the official menu, you can show the tweet shared by the Ministry to the pantry or restaurant staff. If they still refuse to comply, you are encouraged to file a complaint. You can do this via:
- The Railway Helpline number 139
- The Rail Madad section on the RailYatri app
- Or by tagging Indian Railways on X (formerly Twitter)
This move by the Ministry is meant to make pricing transparent and ensure a better travel experience for all passengers.
