Every day, millions of people travel across the country by train, and to cater to them, Indian Railways operates thousands of trains. There are many rules in place for train travel, which all passengers must follow. However, some rules are made specifically for the comfort and convenience of passengers. During night journeys, most travellers prefer not to be disturbed while sleeping.

But it can be quite frustrating if a TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) wakes you up at night asking for your ticket. It disrupts your sleep and can ruin your mood. That’s why Indian Railways has set specific rules for ticket checking at night. TTEs are not allowed to check tickets after a certain time. It’s important to know your rights as a passenger.

Till What Time Can a TTE Check Tickets?

According to railway rules, TTEs cannot check tickets after 10 PM. This rule is designed keeping in mind the sleep and comfort of passengers travelling in Sleeper and AC coaches. However, if a new passenger boards the train during the journey, the TTE is allowed to check their ticket.

Still, disturbing passengers without any valid reason after 10 PM is against the rules. If any TTE violates this, passengers can file a complaint by calling the railway helpline number 139. Overall, to ensure a peaceful night journey, the railways have clearly defined this time limit.

    Other Night Rules on Trains

Not just ticket checking, several other rules come into effect after 10 PM on trains. Unless absolutely necessary, talking loudly, playing music or watching videos without headphones is strictly prohibited. The main lights in the coach are turned off, and only night lights remain on for minimal disturbance. In some trains, charging points are also disabled from 11 PM to 5 AM to prevent incidents like short circuits or fire. The movement of cleaning staff is also reduced during the night to avoid disturbing passengers.
