A powerful earthquake has shaken the world. On Wednesday, an 8.7-magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, which local authorities have described as the strongest in decades. Following the quake, tsunami warnings have been issued for Japan, Russia, and several Pacific islands. Officials confirmed that the quake triggered waves as high as 4 meters (13 feet) on the Kuril Islands, forcing evacuations to safer areas and causing damage to buildings. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has also confirmed that tsunami waves have been generated, and warnings have been issued for parts of Alaska.

- Warnings are also in effect for the eastern coasts of the Philippines, Indonesia, and China, although so far most wave heights have remained below 1 meter.
- In Russia’s Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky city, there are power outages, mobile network disruptions, and significant damage to several buildings.
- Workers have been evacuated from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant as a precaution. The government has confirmed there is no leakage.
- All ports in Hawaii have been closed, and the U.S. Coast Guard has instructed all ships to remain at sea.
