The World's Only Airport Where You Exit into Three Different Countries! Different Laws Apply Inside

Our world is full of surprises, and there are many fascinating places that leave people amazed. Today, we are going to tell you about an extraordinary airport that stands out for its unique location. What makes this airport special is that when you land here, you can exit into two different countries at the same time! If you step out from one exit, you’ll find yourself in one country, and if you take another exit, you’ll be in a different country—specifically in EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg. Additionally, a third country is also nearby, making this airport a hub that serves the needs of three different nations. Interestingly, two separate sets of laws apply inside this airport.

    A One-of-a-Kind Airport in Europe

We are talking about Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport, also known as EuroAirport. While the airport is officially located in France, it is strategically positioned to serve travelers from Switzerland, France, and Germany. Its location is what makes it truly special. The airport is directly connected to all three countries, and even the customs zones for Switzerland and France exist under the same roof. This means that if you exit through one gate, you will find yourself in Switzerland, whereas exiting through another gate will lead you to France.

Two Different Countries, Two Different Laws

As mentioned earlier, the airport is physically in France, but it is divided into Swiss and French customs zones. Due to this division, two different legal systems are enforced within the airport. The responsibility for airport security lies with French authorities, who occasionally inspect the Swiss section as well. However, the Swiss side has its own security and customs regulations, managed by Swiss agencies. Travelers can also choose to use either Euros or Swiss Francs for transactions inside the airport, depending on their preference.

A Symbol of Cooperation Between Nations

The idea of building this unique airport was first conceived in the 1930s, with the goal of fostering cooperation between France and Switzerland. However, due to World War II, the project was put on hold. It was only after 1946 that construction resumed, symbolizing post-war collaboration between nations. Switzerland provided most of the funding for the airport, while France contributed the land.

This airport provides access to three major cities in three different countries:

    • Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany
    • Mulhouse, France
    • Basel, Switzerland

Additionally, the airport’s governing board includes representatives from France, Germany, and Switzerland, further highlighting its role as a bridge between these nations.

This makes EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg a truly one-of-a-kind international airport where travelers experience seamless cross-border movement while witnessing an extraordinary example of international cooperation!
