The Chronicles of the 4.5 Gang Review: Local Crime Gets a Fresh Twist

    Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

SonyLIV’s latest Malayalam original “The Chronicles of the 4.5 Gang” brings something different to the crime comedy genre. This gritty yet darkly hilarious series, inspired by true events, premiered on August 29, 2025, offering viewers a peek into Kerala’s underground world through fresh local flavor.

    An Unusual Gang Story

The series follows five protagonists, including one dwarf from the slums, as they venture into the flower mafia around temples and other odd businesses to gain public respect. What sounds bizarre on paper actually works well on screen, thanks to its authentic local setting in Trivandrum.

Created by Krishand, the show features veteran actors Jagadish and Indrans alongside talented performers like Niranj Maniyanpilla, Sreenath Babu, and Darshana Rajendran. The casting feels perfect for this type of story, bringing credibility to characters who could easily have become caricatures.

    Raw and Real Storytelling

What unfolds isn’t clean or polished, but that’s exactly the point. The narrative sidesteps big cinematic moments and leans into awkward chaos, petty gangsters, and hyper-specific city politics. It’s messy, but it’s their mess, making it feel genuinely authentic.

The series blends action, dark comedy, and gangster drama against Kerala’s capital city backdrop. Unlike typical crime shows that focus on big-time criminals, this one explores smaller, more relatable criminal enterprises that actually exist in our neighborhoods.

    What Makes It Work

The real strength lies in its local authenticity. The flower mafia concept might sound silly to outsiders, but anyone familiar with temple politics in Kerala will recognize the truth behind it. These small-scale operations and territorial disputes feel more real than grand heist storylines.

The dark comedy doesn’t force itself on viewers. Humor emerges naturally from situations and character interactions rather than scripted punchlines. The actors, especially the veterans, handle this balance perfectly.

    Areas for Improvement

The pacing occasionally stumbles, with some episodes feeling slower than necessary. The series sometimes gets too caught up in local specifics, which might confuse viewers unfamiliar with Kerala’s cultural context.

Certain subplots could be tighter. While the authentic feel is appreciated, some scenes drag without adding much value to the overall story.

    Technical Merits

The production values suit the story’s grassroots nature. The series doesn’t try to glamorize its characters or settings, keeping everything grounded and believable. The cinematography captures Trivandrum’s real streets rather than picture-perfect locations.

    Final Verdict

“The Chronicles of the 4.5 Gang” succeeds in bringing fresh perspective to the crime genre. By focusing on smaller, local criminal activities rather than international conspiracies, it creates something uniquely Malayalam while remaining accessible to broader audiences.

The series proves that interesting stories exist in our own backyards. You don’t need elaborate plots when you have authentic characters dealing with real situations, no matter how unusual they might be.

Worth watching for: Crime comedy fans, viewers interested in regional storytelling, and anyone looking for something genuinely different from typical web series fare.
