Take Charge of My Heart Review: A Girl Who Shocks Everyone and a Boy Who Needs Her to Survive

Chae Soo Bin and Kim Young Kwang give a familiar K-drama formula a playful, electric spark in Netflix's new fantasy romance.

Take Charge of My Heart Review

Take Charge of My Heart Review: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

Take Charge of My Heart follows a woman who produces electricity and a chaebol heir who needs it to stay alive. The plot is predictable, but the lead chemistry and a strong “survival romance” hook make it an easy, fun watch.

    Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
    Platform: Netflix
    Genre: Fantasy Romantic Comedy
    Language: Korean
Cast: Chae Soo Bin, Kim Young Kwang, Cha Woo Min

“Just stay by my side.” On the surface, that sounds like a sweet romantic line. In Netflix’s new series Take Charge of My Heart, though, those words carry a much heavier meaning. For the couple at the center of this story, staying close is not just about love. It is about survival.

The show is a romantic comedy built on a playful fantasy idea. Na Bo Bae, played by Chae Soo Bin, became a walking source of electricity after a strange accident in her childhood.

Baek Ho Rang, played by Kim Young Kwang, is a chaebol heir who lives with an artificial heart that must be recharged every single day. Their unusual situations lead them into a practical living arrangement, where being near each other is literally necessary to keep them alive.

If you have watched a few K-dramas, the bones of this story will feel very familiar. Bo Bae is the strong, hardworking heroine who keeps going despite loneliness and tough times. Ho Rang is the rich man who enters her life through an awkward meeting and soon becomes impossible to avoid.

Then comes top star Ji Eun Ho, played by Cha Woo Min, whose steady affection for Bo Bae completes the classic love triangle. It is a setup that has worked many times before, and the show does not pretend otherwise.

What helps is the light touch. The series handles the expected mishaps with a breezy, playful tone that makes it easy to settle in without asking too much from the viewer.

There is also a clever extra layer. Bo Bae works as a screenwriter, and her living arrangement with Ho Rang slips into the story she is writing. In her fictional version, the roles are flipped, and Ho Rang becomes her bodyguard. This creates some light comedy while also showing how much Bo Bae secretly longs for a fairy-tale romance.

The real strength here is the chemistry between the two leads, which turns out to be better than you might expect. Chae Soo Bin has long felt at home in romantic comedies, and she gives Bo Bae a lovely mix of loneliness and bright determination.

Her electric shocks have kept people away, so the character could easily have felt sad and heavy. Instead, Chae gives her warmth and confidence, which keeps her easy to root for.

Kim Young Kwang is just as good. He plays the polished, cold city man well, but he also reveals a goofy and awkward side that makes Ho Rang far more charming than his rich-heir image suggests.

Their playful back-and-forth also lets the emotional side of the story come through. Ho Rang is the only man who is not affected by Bo Bae’s electricity, and Bo Bae is the only woman who can recharge his artificial heart. Each one can literally save the other.

That “survival relationship” adds a real sense of urgency under all the comedy. No matter how silly things get, there is always a clear reason these two cannot just walk away.

The series does have weak spots. Because it leans so heavily on the familiar rich-man-meets-ordinary-woman formula, long-time rom-com fans will not find many surprises. The electricity idea is creative, but the story progression and love triangle stay in predictable territory. The supporting characters also struggle to leave much of an impression.

Still, the show wisely does not chase novelty just for the sake of it. It embraces what people love about a classic K-rom-com and adds a fun twist. With two leads who clearly understand their characters, that approach keeps an otherwise recognizable story entertaining from start to finish.
