Retro Tamil Movie (2025) Review: A Bold, Emotional Ride Through Love and Legacy

Retro Tamil Movie (2025) Review: A Bold, Emotional Ride Through Love and Legacy

Karthik Subbaraj returns with a bang in Retro (Love-Laughter-War) — a gripping romantic action drama that weaves heart, humour, and havoc into one cinematic experience. Anchored by a powerhouse performance from Suriya, this film offers more than just the usual gangster tale — it’s a layered narrative of redemption, loyalty, and the cost of peace.

    Plot & Direction:

At its core, Retro tells the story of Paarivel “Paari” Kannan (Suriya), a reformed gangster trying to build a quiet life with his beloved Rukmini (Pooja Hegde). But when ghosts of his past come knocking, peace turns into peril. Karthik Subbaraj’s direction excels at balancing tense action sequences with moments of deep emotional vulnerability. The storytelling is nonlinear at times, keeping the viewer engaged and guessing.

    Performances:

Suriya delivers one of his most intense and heartfelt performances in recent years. He effortlessly moves between tender moments with Pooja Hegde and explosive confrontations with his enemies. Pooja Hegde shines as Rukmini, bringing warmth and strength to her role, especially in scenes that explore her character’s evolution from innocence to resilience. Joju George and Jayaram also leave an impact, particularly as moral compasses in Paari’s journey.

    Music & Cinematography:

Santhosh Narayanan’s music is a character in itself. The soundtrack is vibrant, with “Love Detox” and “Kanimaa” being standouts — the former featuring a surprise cameo from Shriya Saran, and the latter turning meta with Santhosh appearing as himself. The cinematography captures both gritty streets and tender silences with flair, evoking nostalgia and tension in equal measure.

    Action & Emotion:

Action sequences are brutal and stylish, but never without emotional weight. What sets Retro apart is how it uses violence not for spectacle, but to reveal character — each blow Paari throws is tinged with regret or rage.

    Final Verdict:

Retro is more than a gangster film — it’s a tale of love that refuses to be buried, of laughter amidst pain, and of war within and without. With a stirring narrative, rich visuals, and memorable performances, it stands tall as one of Tamil cinema’s most ambitious films of 2025.
